Intro: Off Road Stroller Conversion

My family goes out every weekend to a park ,festival or some sort of outdoor event and after 3 kids I got tired of pushing a stroller with little wheels over roots ,rocks and grass .Now its time to get smart, we have bought and garbage picked several strollers and bikes over the years so I had stuff to play with .Now its time to give my daughter a smooth ride. your typical off road stroller costs any where between 150-700 dollars I for one will not spend that much money when I have a workshop full of tools and old bikes and will and ingenuity to build one myself . The whole project will take about two hours if you take your time.

STEP 1: One Last Bumpy Ride

What you will need

A stroller with a single wheel on the back that when folded the wheel protrudes

2 front bike tires mine are 16 inch rims

threaded rod 5/8

electrical conduit

and a set of wrenches

vise grips

screw driver

and some grease

STEP 2: Remove the Wheels

Use a screw driver to pop the plastic cap and the c-clips off the axel . Then push the tab and you can remove the axel by pulling up and out . Next insert a piece of conduit the fits between the wheels and push the threaded rod into the conduit and put the clip back in place

STEP 3: The Hardest Part

This is the hardest part and I suggest to do it over a bucket or tray because the bearings can fall all over the place it happened to me. With a wrench on either side of the tire remove the nuts from the axel and slowly remove it over something to catch falling bearings . You will have to hold the tire axel in vise grips to get the other nut off .Replace the nuts on the new threaded axel grease the bearings and install the tire on the axel. tighten then tires down .

STEP 4: Ready to Roll

its done you have saved hundreds of dollars and it still folds the same its just a little taller now . This project cost me $1.58 in supplies all the parts I have saved form the garbage , kids bikes can be found in the trash nearly every day . The new wheels get over all obstacle we have encountered and even go up and down stairs with ease. Go out and Ride into fun with a new set of wheels .

Buying a jogging stroller and want to go to the beach (soft sand) but I want to put much wider tires on it so they won't sink or dig into the powder like sand. They will either be solid plastic or balloon type tires. Any ideas would be helpful. So far I'm looking at having to make my own "J" type bar to replace the fork type mounting. Don't have tools or welder to do these types of things though.
Is it possible to add suspension or is it soft enough with the air filled tires? I had looked at harbor freight before but couldn't find how to mount them on. Because of the weird fitting of the axle. Which is also very thin.
Hi. How do you get the height to even out with the different size of wheels?
Adjust angle of seat
Do these need to be kid bike tires or can you get an equivalent at home depot or whatever? I don't have kids.
I got a cat. And I'm pimping out his stroller.
Yep any air wheel will work
I have 2 dog strollers, (yes my dog is a geriatric princess with overheating and breathing issues but still loves our walks) one has rubber air filled tires which is a heavy, not exactly compact when folded but a dream to push on almost all surfaces and a cheaper lightweight one with crappy plastic wheels for going to shopping centers or walking at the beach. I want to get rid of all of the plastic wheels, especially the double front wheels which lock up sideways when it's most inconvenient and are like those shown in your pictures. My front wheels just 'snap' on, the back wheels were already attached so I don't know how those are attached. I need the maneuverability that the front wheels are supposed to provide but don't. I have Home Depot, Ace Hardware, and Harbor Freight in my area but am not sure what to look for. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Casters would work on the front

This is fantastic. Will it make my stroller able to navigate snowy streets?

late reply but ya after about a year of hiking with it the bearing did go.

Hi, I know it's been a while since you posted this. But I was just wondering whether the threaded rod chewed up the bearings or did you cover the thread somehow? Best wishes

Harbor Freight sells very small air filled wheels, with a all plastic rim/hub with a 5/8" hole in the center. I think it would make the build complete with air filled front tires. Your child could lay back and take a nap while your trail running. Baby says, "ya my shit rides Like a Caddie, not like your plastic tyco!"

i had thought about doing something like that but I never found small wheels. I found just a slight tip down and the stroller goes on two wheels and climbs stairs and crosses roots and rocks with ease.

Hi I would like to do the same to a lawnmower, how do you fit the larger diameter hubs of the bike wheels to the frame of the stroller??

uhh I show how above you uses the same hardware that comes from the bike tire and the same size threaded rod . that would make a very tall lawnmower it will eat your toes

Wow, awesome! Ready for some serious walking! :)
