When your bathtub gets old and nasty you have a few options to fix it. However it’s usally expensive. Put in a new one, have someone come re-glaze it, or you could buy a expensive re-glaze kit and do it your self, or my way that will cost you about $20.

Step 1: Getting Started

You need to decide if your going to take the tub out or leave it in. This can be messy so I took mine out and did it out side. If you leave it in you need to tap off enything you don’t want paint on and always make sure you have proper ventilation.

Step 2: Things You Will Need

90% of being successful is preparation the tub needs to be clean and I mean super clean. You will need.
A putty knife
SOS scrubber
220 sandpaper
Mineral spirits
T.S.P ( trisodium phosphate)
Rags
Rubber cleaning gloves
Krylon appliance spray paint any color you want (Ichose white)

Step 3: Cleaning the Tub

Like I said 90% of being successful is peeping the tub for paint.
1. Use the putty knife and scrape off any caulk, soppe scum, or hard water, don’t gouge at the tub.
2. After everything is removed take a clean rag and wipe down the tub with mineral spirits. Let it dry.
3. When the tub is dry lightly sand down everywhere you’re going to paint with 220 sandpaper.
4. Wipe with mineral spirits in a clean rag it a second time.
5. Using the SOS pad, TSP, gloves and water wash and rinse the tub. Let it dry completely.

Step 4: Painting the Tub

Using the Krylon appliance paint you will need 3 or 4 cans of paint. Paint several thin layers on to the tub waiting 30 minutes at least in between layer. The thin layers ensure the paint dries correctly, I did about five coats of paint. Once you have all of your coats of paint on let the tub dry floor at a minimum of 24 hours before reinstalling or using the tub.
I have used this method in my own home and in several rental houses. so far I’ve had no problems with the durability but like I said 90% of this project is making sure the tub is prepared correctly.
