Oyster Shell Candles

On a recent visit to our little summer home on Chincoteague Island, Virginia, I found quite a few oyster shells while I was digging on the side of our yard planting hostas. Oysters are very plentiful in the waters of Chincoteague but I had no idea there were so many shells in the ground in our yard! I made a big bag of them and brought them home. When I saw the Soap and Candle Making Speed Challenge, I thought it would be fun to make some candles using the shells I had saved. Follow along to see how easy it is to make them.

Step 1: Chincoteague, Virginia

Step 2: Supplies Needed

oyster shells

small saucepan

small rubber spatula

candle wax

gold glitter

scissors

wooden cutting board

artificial flowers for decoration

candle wicks with clips attached

spoon

custard cup or ramekin

imitation pearls

Step 3: Wash the Shells

I selected 6 shells and washed each one.

Step 4: Melt the Wax

Place the pot over low heat. Add a block of candle wax. Allow the wax to melt completely, stirring occasionally.

Step 5: Add Some Glitter

Sprinkle some glitter into the melted wax. Remove from heat.

Step 6: Time to Cut

Cut 6 wicks to the desired length.

Step 7: Add Wick and Wax

Center a wick with clip in an oyster shell. Spoon wax into the shell, covering the wick clip and filling the shell as much as possible with wax. As the wax sets, sprinkle on some more glitter. Repeat with remaining oyster shells.

Step 8: Add the Pearls

Place the pearls in hot water to warm them. As the wax sets, press a warm pearl gently onto the wax in each shell.

Step 9: Finished!

You can arrange the oyster shell candles on a pretty wooden cutting board with artificial flowers if desired. I think they look really pretty and I will display them in my kitchen.
