With just a few materials and creativity, you can design a beautiful, customized lampshade that adds a personal touch to any space. This budget-friendly project is perfect for beginners

Let’s get started on crafting your beautiful paper lampshade.

Supplies

  1. A round paper lantern (basic wire-frame lantern)
  2. White or off-white paper (thin, lightweight, and slightly stiff)
  3. Scissors or a paper cutter
  4. Strong adhesive or glue gun
  5. Ruler and pencil
  6. String or fishing line (optional, for hanging)
  7. fairy lights or LED bulb (for safe lighting)

Step 1: PREPARE THE PAPER STRIPS:

  1. Cut long, thin strips of paper (around 10-15 inches long and 0.5 inches wide).
  2. You may taper the end to create natural, feather-like effect.

Step 2: PREPARE THE LANTERN BASE:

  1. Assemble the round paper lantern (if it comes folder).
  2. Ensure the surface is clean and dry for better adhesion.

Step 3: ATTACH THE PAPER STRIPS:

  1. Start at the bottom of the lantern and work your way up.
  2. Apply a small amount of adhesive to the top of each strip and press it onto the lantern.
  3. Overlap the strips slightly for a layered effect.
  4. Continue gluing strips around the entire lantern, ensuring they flow downward naturally.

Step 4: ADD MORE LAYERS FOR a FULLER LOOK:

  1. Once the first layer is done, repeat with another layer above, covering any gaps.
  2. Continue until the entire lantern is covered in the fringed paper strips.

Step 5: FINISHING TOUCHES:

  1. Trim any uneven or overly long strips for uniformity.
  2. Carefully shake off any loose paper.
  3. Use fairy lights or an LED bulb for safety.
  4. If needed, suspend the lantern using a string or hook.

Now, your DIY paper lampshade is ready to hang and brighten up your space!
