Intro: PVC Seed Planting Tool / Clod Maker

Spring is coming soon and it's time to start sowing seeds for a successful garden!
The idea here is to build a clod maker easy to make and cheap (even for free with recycled materials in my case).

STEP 1: Supplies

1x 11cm pvc pipe Ø 40mm

1x 13cm pvc pipe Ø 32mm

1x screw Ø 5mm (5cm long) + 1 washer + 1 self blocking nut

1x screw Ø 4mm (2cm long mini) + 3 washers (with the same diameter than the screw's head) + 1 nut

1x washer Ø 32mm

1x piece of plywood (1cm thick mini)

1x something to use as a handle, the ideal would be a pvc T but i used an old curtain rod end.

STEP 2:

bore the Ø 40 pipe with a 6mm drill as shown on the picture. Do the same on the other side.

STEP 3:

draw lines between the the 2 holes and cut (i used a dremel). Do the same on the other side.

STEP 4:

bore the Ø 32 pipe with the 6mm drill (see picture for measure).

STEP 5:

cut the plywood with a Ø 32 hole saw and gather in this order : the Ø 4 screw, 2 washers, the Ø 32 washer, the plywood piece, the last washer and the nut.

STEP 6:

insert the piece of the step 4 in the Ø 32 pipe.

STEP 7:

insert the Ø 32 pipe in the Ø 40 pipe and put the Ø 5 screw. Put the washer and the self blocking nut on the other side but don't squeeze too much, the 2 pipes must slide.
To complete the clod maker, slot the handle on the Ø 32 pipe.

The job is done!!

STEP 8:

Now put some drenched loam on the clod maker, compact well and press the handle to unmold.
All that's left is to put a seed inside the hole and to fill in with a bit of loam.

No need to sprinkle immediately, it's wet enough!

Enjoy!

Do you have this in fractions. imperial
Pipes are 1" and 1-1/4"!
Cool project! Do the clods retain their shape? Can you post a photo showing what you do with them afterwards (i.e. in a tray, arranged, etc)?
Hey Shawn, thanks! Yes, clods retain their shape but maybe it's better not to manipulate them too much...
For the "storage", i use trays of galvanised shelving turned over and welded to keep water. Advantages: easy to carry and quick to water! (I uploaded pictures on step 8 :) )
This is quite a clever idea, thanks for sharing.
Very clever. I can see modifying this by using a larger pipe as I don't care for the small ones.
