Painting Wood Block Intractable

Materials

· One 11 ¼” by 5 ½” piece of untreated wood

· Sandpaper

· Masking tape

· At least one large and one fine paintbrush

· One craft sponge

· A pencil

· A piece of paper (preferably cardstock or something that won’t soak up paint)

· An exacto knife

· Cutting space (cutting board or fabric board)

· One ruler or measuring tape

· One gold and one copper Rub’n’Buff

· Copper, black, and brown acrylic paint

*Optional

· A plastic bag

· Apron or craft clothes that can get paint on them

· Plastic gloves

Step 1: Picture and Note

Notes: Preferably done outside, but if that is not an option, use plastic bag to protect work space. I would also recommend practicing techniques on scrap wood or paper before main project.

Step One: Lightly sand all edges, sides, and corners of wood block to prevent splinters and smooth out rough spots.

· It doesn’t take much before it is smooth enough.

· Blow or wipe off residue dust.

Step Two: Measure in ½” into the block from the edge all around, mark with pencil about every 2”.

Step Three: Cover measured ½” with masking tape. Line up edges of tape with pencil lines.

Step Four: (Shake paint before using). With small dollop of copper paint on large brush, apply thin layer to exposed portion of wood, dragging brush back and forth in even strokes.

· Don’t be afraid to go over masking tape.

· Use edge of brush to get into corners.

NOTE: ALWAYS WASH BRUSHES AND SPONGE AFTER USE! DO NOT LET PAINT DRY ON BRUSHES OR SPONGE!

Step Five: Inspect closely to make sure paint is even. Touch up if necessary. Let dry.

· If planning on multiple coats of paint, let dry for 30 minutes between each coat. Repeat as many times as desired.

Step Six: When dry, squeeze very small amount of gold Rub’n’Buff onto finger (use plastic glove if desired).

· A LITTLE goes a LONG WAY.

Step Seven: VERY lightly brush gold Rub’n’Buff over painted wood, using long or short strokes depending on the look wanted.

Step Eight: Draw or print stencil of choice on cardstock or nonabsorbent material.

· Make sure the image fits the block of wood.

Step 9: The Steps

Step Nine: Cut out portions of stencil that you wish paint to fill with exacto knife, leave other parts connected to paper.

· Be very careful! Exacto knife is sharp!

· Cut on appropriate cutting space like a cutting board or fabric board.

· Use tip of knife to work out curves or small spaces.

· Cut stencil to manageable size.

Step Ten: Lay stencil on dried block and tape down edges.

Step Eleven: Paint black over entire stencil.

Step 11: The Steps

Step Twelve: Let dry for 30 minutes.

*Optional Step: Use small amount of copper Rub’n’Buff on finger over dried black paint, moving lightly in circular motions.

Step 12: The Steps

Step Thirteen: Remove stencil. Clean up and fill in uneven edges or missing portions.

Step Fourteen: Remove masking tape from ½” on block’s sides.

Step Fifteen: Mask off inner painted part of block, edge of tape on edge of paint.

Step Sixteen: Place small dollop of brown paint on sponge or onto plastic bag.

Step Seventeen: Sponge brown paint gently onto exposed edge of wood, tapping or spreading until desired look is achieved.

Step Eighteen: Let dry for 15 minutes.

Step Nineteen: Gently peel of masking tape.

Step 16: The Steps

Step Twenty: Make any needed touch-ups.
