Introduction: Personalised Wooden Coasters

Hello, we are Kal (12 y/o) and Sara (13 y/o) and we are two students of the International School Hilversum, in the Netherlands. For challenge hour, a subject where you take a challenge, we made specialised coasters. In this instructable we are going to explain how you can make the wooden coasters. We made the coaster with quotes on it and a name of a nice drink, but you can also put something else on it. We chose to do the wooden coasters because we thought it was a nice idea and we got our inspiration from another instructable. And now we put our own spin on it. Enjoy!

Step 1: Find Your Wood

First, you need to find a good strong log about 10 to 30 centimeters long and 5 to 13 centimeters wide. If you want to make 6 coasters, just like we did, your log must be around 10 centimeters long, then you have enough spare if you need it. Make sure it is a strong wood, like beech, ash oak or pine. Don't use anything that is rotten, because it will break and fall apart.

Step 2: Cut the Coasters

Then you need to saw the wood into nice even circles, and be careful the saw is not slanted, because then there will be an uneven surface, about 1 centimetre thick or more if you prefer it to be thicker. This needs to be done with precision, so before you cut, measure how thick you will make your coasters. Measure twice, cut once. don't be to crazy, be gentle but firm.

Step 3: Writing You Message

When you have done that you can write or draw with pencil something on the coaster like a quote, the name of your favourite drink, happy birthday or your name or anything you like. These coasters can be specialised, but if you prefer, you can just leave them blank. But we think if it is a gift or for yourself, making it specialised is better.

Step 4: Using the Wood Burner Tool

Now you need to go over all the text with the ‘burner’, make sure you make even lines. The point of the ‘burner’ is that you write with it, but it is very hot so do not touch it until it has cooled down. if you don't have a wood burner tool, feel free to just go over with a sharpie. Once you have used the burner tool, erase the pencil. but make sure to do this after it cools down.

Step 5: Wax Finish

After the wood has cooled down, go over the wood with some wax. This will help preserve the wood and make it more shiny. Make sure to apply 1 or 2 coats and leave it to dry.

Step 6: Done!

Once you've done all that, you're finished. Now you have your very own personalised coasters. We hope this inspires you to make your own. Enjoy!
