Introduction: Lasercut Phone Stand

Hello everyone!

I've got several projects going and I hope to finish them soon.

In the meantime, I wanted to share with you a super simple idea for a phone stand I design and realised with the laser-cutter. Having this kind of machine will let you to chose and pick any kind of usable material you could think of (plexiglas, cardboard, paper, wood, MDF...).

It is smaller than a credit card, and I'm sure that with little effort (I will probably try to do that) the design could be improved (one idea is to 3D print it in order to design a clip mechanism that could keep it flat and easy to carry in the wallet as one piece).

Step 1: Design Features

Why it looks like that?

One of my recurrent ideas is to recycle and make the most of out we have, in any context.

That's why the shape of this phone holder. It has some characteristics:

- almost-zero wasting material. A design that can be reproduced and cut minimizing the wasting of valuable material. (see pattern)

- sturdy and designed for landscape and portrait support

- small size but with great stability

- fixed inclination that can be changed before cutting. Now is quite useful and neutral position.

Step 2: File

As for now I put here a dwg and dxf file (just tell me if you need different formats and I'll do what I can).

As it is, each part of the stand is a polyline, and the two cuts are 2,9mm (yes, the file is in mm) in order to have a tight fit when assembled for a 3mm MDF sheet. The distance should be changed depending on the thickness of your material (I might someday make a dynamic block, but it's very easy modification and everyone can handle this ;) )

If you want to attempt the cutting of multiple pieces, and even for one, I would recommend to copy and positioning all the pieces as in the pattern showed before and use "OVERKILL" and "JOIN" (if autocad) in order to save time on the laser machine and avoid multiple cuts on the same line. This procedure will give you a super fast cutting time for a high number of pieces.

Step 3: Conclusion

The project is super easy (but searching I couldn't find a similar design) and I wanted to explain you my design process and the different features of it. Please consider the optimisation process and save time, material and money.

Here is my personal piece in use in both configuration.

(I will probably try with plexyglas and even 3D printing)

I sincerely ask you to give opinion and share your attempt and upgrade over my design, in order to improve.

This is version _1. Let's make it better!
