Introduction: Pizza Box Praxinoscope - Praxinoscópio Na Caixa De Pizza

About: Artista brasileiro interessado em gambiarras no geral!

Sesc Interlagos, in São Paulo, has a children's program called mini-cinephile and I was invited to give a toy workshop for them. So I decided to build this toy using cheap materials, because the effect is very interesting.

Step 1: Montando a Caixa De Pizza

O primeiro passo é montar a caixa, neste caso, porque ela vem totalmente desdobrada.

The pizza box I used was the one of that kind, but actually, I could have used either one.

The first step is to assemble the box, in this case because it comes fully unfolded. It is also important to find the center of the box.

I preferred to leave the printed side of the carton to the inside and the raw side of the carton to the outside. For the prototype I photographed, I left the stamp on the pizza box to show that I was using such a box.

The colored side I used as the base and the white side for the part that will turn.

Step 2: Preparando O Carrossel

I cut three cardboard discs.

The two little ones I glued together. They are used as spacers to keep the rotating top away from the base.

I glued a cork to the base, from the inside of the box. And I used a barbecue skewer as a central shaft, stuffed into the lid of the carton and then into the cork. This prevents the cardboard from ripping.

Step 3: Montagem Dos Espelhos

The secret of this toy is the quality of the mirrors. The version I put together for the video is made with polystyrene mirrors. They are cheap and safer than glass mirrors. But the version that was assembled for the Interlagos SESC was made with metalized mirrored Contact.

I did some tests with plastic sheets of mirrored plastic and the result is also very interesting.

The image does not have the same quality, but as the distance between the mirrors and the carousel of the film is small, this does not compromise the effect.

You need to use a mirror for every frame in your movie. In my case, the film had 15 frames and it took 15 mirrors. The contact sheet measures 45 cm wide and to take advantage of the material, I determined that each mirror would be 3cm wide (15 frames x 3cm = 45cm). The height of the mirrors was 5cm.

I used an entire 45 cm contact strip, without cutting the mirrors individually.

I pasted the contact tape into a cardboard paper, measuring 48cm x 5cm, to prevent the mirror from being deformed.

Then I closed the carousel and glued it onto the larger cardboard disk.

Step 4: Final

Glue the cylinder with the mirrors in the center of the cover, so that when the cover rotates, the cylinder also rotates with it.

I mounted the frames of the movie I used in this svg file. There are four pieces of the film, which you put together and form a tape with all the pictures. Then close the film on a handle and attach to the pizza box lid as shown.

Each frame of your movie needs to be in front of each mirror.

Ready!

The toy is made.

I've attached some more pictures that I researched on the internet.

Virtually any animated gif that works in a loop should be used to play.
