Introduction: Plane Holder / Floating Shelf
So if you've seen any of my latest project you'll already know i have been re fitting my workshop / shed.
Heres my take on how to store hand planes. Its essentially a small floating shelf that ive put above my bench.
Its pretty simple but works great as now all my planes are easy to see and reach while im working.
I hope you like it.

Step 1: Scrap Wood Layout
I started where i always start, with what most people call scrap wood.
I found a few pieces that would make up the shelf and the edge / trim and planed it all flat and square, then made sure my plane would actually fit on there.
Step 2: Cut 45's
After everything was square and flat i cut the trim at 45 on the ends to try make the shelf / holder a bit better looking , this was a bit of a pain with such small pieces so my miter box really helped.
Once it was all cut i glued the trim along the from and sides of the shelf / holder.
Step 3: Bevel & Drill
I added a small bevel to the shelf to again make it look a bit more interesting, as every time i work at the bench i will be able to see it and having it look a bit nicer just made sense.
To attach the shelf i wanted to use dowels but the wood was to thin so i came up with a simpler solution, much like my other projects i cut the head off some nails , pre drilled and used these as dowels.
Step 4: Attach
Using the sharp end of the nails i simply marked where the shelf should go, made a indent with the nails and pre drilled holes again, basically the same as using dowels but with thinner material.
And these have been in use for a month now with no problems so im sure the nail dowel system i strong enough.
Pretty simple idea but with a twist.
These have made life so much simpler while working , i know that if i need a plane its right above me and i can also store them knowing theres no chance of knocking them over or damaging the blade.
I hope you guys and girls like it.
