Intro: Put a Ring on It - Ring Toss Wedding Game

My daughter thought it would be fun to have lawn games for her wedding. We will have all the normal lawn games like corn hole, giant Jenga , and Connect 4. Ring toss seemed like an obvious game for a wedding. What better thing to toss a ring on at a wedding then a finger. One idea led to another and that is how we ended up with a 4 1/2 foot tall hand with giant gold rings to toss on the fingers.

Materials Needed:

  • Newspapers
  • Cardboard
  • Masking tape
  • Brown paper (from grocery store bags or off a roll)
  • Wheat paste
  • CelluClay
  • Poster board
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Plywood
  • Flower Pot
  • Styrofoam rings
  • Drylok
  • White material
  • Galvanized pipe
  • Flange
  • Paint brushes
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue
  • Box cutter

STEP 1: Basic Hand Shape

Once you find a picture of a hand that will work for your game, enlarge it on a large piece of cardboard. A box cutter will make cutting it out an easy job. Hot glue extra pieces of cardboard to add extra strength so the fingers won't bend.

STEP 2: Shape Hand

Shaping the hands was done by using wadded up newspaper and masking tape. Make small balls of newspapers and hold them in place with masking tape. Use plenty of masking tape. Keep adding balls of newspaper until you get the shape you want. The fingernails were cut from poster board and hot glued on.

STEP 3: Paper Mache'

Paper mache' the whole hand with wheat paste and brown paper. The brown paper makes a nice strong base. On top of the brown paper CelluClay can be added. More details can be added with the CelluClay and it can be sanded. A galvanized pipe pushed up into the hand holds it up. A floor flange screwed on a big rectangle of plywood will hold up the galvanized pipe.

STEP 4: Painting

Undercoat the whole hand using Drylok paint. Drylok will help make it more water resistant. Paint the hand with acrylics in flesh tones.

STEP 5: Rings

These green styrofoam rings make perfect wedding bands. Paint them with gold acrylic paint and they are ready to be tossed on a finger.

STEP 6: Sign

Cut thin plywood into some fun sign shapes. Paint them up to explain the game and hold the rings. A pot with some rocks in it will hold up the sign. Flowers were added to decorate it up a little.

STEP 7: Finish the Base

The pearl bracelet originally planned didn't work. Two yards of fabric gathered around the wrist finished it up nicely.

I've just come across this and have bought the required 'ingredients' to attempt to make it for my wedding this summer. Not sure it'll look as good as yours but if it looks like a hand I'll be happy!

When and where is your wedding. We have a big hand we wont need after July 17. Just thought I would let you know. I am sure you will make a great hand.

Thanks! Now we are set for wedding gifts for the happy couple. If anybody else makes this (using the correct hand, doh!) I want to give it a high five with our hand
