My wife and I decided that we wanted to make homemade gifts for each other for our anniversary this year. I had seen something similar to this in a store, so I decided to try my hand at it. I am very pleased with the results. Overall, the project took me about 4 hours and about $20.

Step 1: Materials

1 - Fence Pickett, approx 1"x6"x6'
1 - 1/2"x2"x4' pine board
1 - 7"x9"x1/4" scrap of plywood
1 Pane of glass cut to 6.5"x8.5"
1 Can of spray paint
3 Clips (I used the kind used for holding in window screens)
Some 1 inch finish nails
Lots of Alphabet Stickers (from local craft store)
Eye Screws and Hanging Wire
1 Good Quote

Tools

Miter Saw (Could Use handsaw)
Router or table saw to cut the notch for the glass to nest in.
Hammer
Wood Glue

Step 2: Cut and Glue

Cut the Boards
Cut the 1x6 board into

2 pieces that are 16.5 inches long
2 pieces that are 4.5 inches long

Cut the 1/2x2 board into

2 pieces that are approx. 14 inches long

Cut the 1/4" plywood scrap to

Approx. 9"x7"

Glue Up

Edge glue the pieces so that a hole is left in the center.
Clamp together and wipe away excess glue (especially from the front)
Nail the two 1/2x2's onto either side of the hole (vertically or horizontally depending on orientation of picture)

Cut Notch

Next you will need to cut a notch for the glass to rest in. I did this part after assembly, but it may be easier to do before you glue the boards. If you have a table saw you can cut a dado into the edge of the board that is the width of the glass. Otherwise you will need to use a router to cut a rabbet or notch into the edge of the boards. (See Picture)

Step 3: Stick on Letters

Start by planning how many lines you will need on a piece of paper.
Determine the appropriate spacing of each line.
Measure out the spacing on the frame, and using a straight edge, lightly pencil in the lines.
Stick on the letters.
- I found the letters have about 30 mins. of sticky-ness before they start peeling so work carefully, but quickly.

Step 4: Paint and Peel

Paint

Spray Paint your frame making sure you get even coverage on all surfaces.
- I only did one light coat, which allowed the wood grain to show through
Wait for the paint to dry, then peel the stickers off.

Step 5: Add Hardware

Add Hardware

First, attach eye hooks into the support boards, and string picture hanging wire between them..
Next, Place the piece of plywood squarely over the hole.
Hammer in the screen window clips to keep the plywood in place.
Swivel the clips, and remove the plywood.
Next gently place the glass into the center opening, resting on the ledge you cut. Add the picture of your choosing. The center opening will be 5.5"x7.5" so you will either need a custom size picture or some matting.
Finally, add a piece cardboard to keep everything pressed in place.
