Introduction: Remix Breathalyzer 2.0 (Alcohol Meter)

About: hello, i'm a student of electronic and communication. i love making things which are easy to build, cheaper and create a deep impression on others.
Message: PLEASE MAKE YOUR CITY CLEAN AND SAY NO TO POLYBAGS, USE RECYCLE PAPER BAGS. PLANT MORE TREES AND MAKE THIS EARTH GREEN. Use old recycle parts for projects and save money and environment. :-)

STORY BEHIND THIS PROJECT:

This is my first remixed technical instructables project and i see a contest is running , so i decide to take part. I watched many great instructables projects in two days to make my own remix version. on 3rd day i watched couple of instructable projects of alcohol meter like BOOZEDUINO ( by Grissini) and ARDUINO BREATHALYZER (by Bot1398). Both of these projects are great and inspired me alot to make my own cheap Breathalyzer 2.0. i did not want to spend money on Arduino family members. i want this project is free from coding, arduino, and most important its price. After a long trial and error, i find this. This Breathalyzer 2.0 is very easy to build and everybody can afford and each member of instructable are able to buid this.

INTRO:

What is Breathalyzer??? {( OMG! what a difficult question)}

Very Easy--> Breathalyzer are instruments that are utilized in a number of profession to determine the amount of blood alcohol content by analyzing a breath sample obtained from an individual. Police officers often employing the device to deal with incidences of drunk driving.

CAUTION ---- I do not recommended that you actually consume alcohol to test the circuit. the below test with a bottle of alcohol, or its sample in a small glass, should sufficient for most purposes. until you find a drunk,of course! AND DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE.

PRICE Comparision:

Arduino Breathalyzer by Bot1398 = about $ 35
Boozeduino by Grissini = about $70
Remix Breathalyzer2.0 = about &5-8 BOTH PROJECT ARE MIND BLOWING. THEY INSPIRED ME ALOT TO MAKE THIS CHEAPY THING.

Step 1: Parts Required.

  1. 1 x LM3914
  2. 10 X LEDS ( GREEN =3, YELLOW=3, RED=4)
  3. R1 = 500 OHM
  4. R2 = 2.7 KILOOHM
  5. R3 = 3.9 KILOOHM
  6. VR1 = 20 KILOOHM
  7. 1 X 2 PIN TERMINAL BLOCK
  8. 1 X ON/OFF SWITCH
  9. 1 X MQ3 ALCOHOL SENSOR

PARTS YOU ALREADY HAVE:

  1. CARDBOARD
  2. COLOR CHART PAPER
  3. ART AND CRAFT GLUE
  4. ACYRALIC COLORS
  5. ACYRALIC SHEET OR YOU CAN USE CARDBOARD
  6. A LIGHT BULB

DIFFERT PLASTIC PARTS

TOOLS REQUIRD

  1. DREMEL ROTARY TOOL OR HACKSAW
  2. SOLDERING IRON KIT
  3. LOTS OF IMAGINATION.

GET READY AND ENJOY

Step 2: Case Construction.

see pictures for instruction.

  1. cut cardboard by Rotary Tools - Dremel or by hecksaw ( take care when cutting)
  2. cut a cavity for circuit ( backside of case)
  3. paste chart paper
  4. make alcohol level indicator sticker from acyralic color
  5. make holes fro MQ3 SENSOR and for LEDS
  6. cut acyralic sheet and make stand
  7. add glass dome
  8. paste all parts with the help of strong industrial glue

Step 3: Circuit .

Make connection according to this circuit diagram.

An actual size, single side PCB for the REMIX BREATHALYZER2.0 is given in pdf file. download and etch PCB of your own, and its component layout is also.

you can this circuit on breadboard as you like.

Pins 2 and 5 of MQ3 sensor are connected to 5v power supply and the ground, respectively, as shown in circuit.(These pins are actually the heating coil of sensor) .The input pins 1 and 3 of sensor are also connected to 5v. Pin 4 and 6 are connected to input pin 5 of LM3914 IC.

The number of glowing LEDS indicates the concentration level of alcohol detected by the sensor. resistor R1 and VR1 (variable resistor) are used to calibrate the output voltage from the sensor.

For more detal i attached datasheet of MQ3 ALCOHOL SENSOR and LM3914 IC above.

When a drunk breath out near sensor, the alcohol vapours come in contact with MQ3 sensor and its resistance changes. The raise signal level at pin 5 of LM3914 IC , a large number of leds start glowing than the two that were glowing before.

i wired LEDS and MQ3 ALCOHOL SENSOR seperately

i make this circuit on perfboard and install in the case.

  1. 1st attach leds to case. GREEN GREEN GREEN YELLOW YELLOW YELLOW RED RED RED RED
  2. then MQ3 ALCOHOL SENSOR to case.
  3. then the circuit to close the cavity.

Step 4: Working.

Switch on the circuit . before using the circuit, vary VR1 (variable resistor) until LED1 and LED2 glow, when the sensor is in normal environment. now open the cork of an alcohol bottel and bring it near SENSOR1. you willnoticed that LED3, 4, 5 also start glowing. as you bring the alcohol bottle's mouth very close to SENSOR1, all the LEDS (1..................................10) will start glowing.

CAUTION ---- I do not recommended that you actually consume alcohol to test the circuit. the below test with a bottle of alcohol, or its sample in a small glass, should sufficient for most purposes. until you find a drunk,of course! AND DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE.

FOR POWER SUPPLY, I USE A 5V SMARTPONE CHARGER.

Step 5: Download.

Download full REMIX BREATHALYZER2.0 instructable from here .

i make this instructable in pdf form, so download and read offline.

i attached many cartoon images, so reader feel unique and do not sleep while reading.
