Intro: Replacing PSP 1000 Screen

So last summer, my sister broke my psp by dropping it. At the worst possible moment, we were heading down to san diego in two days : (

Anyway, it has been laying around useless for 3/4 a year, so i decided to finally fix it.

STEP 1: The Parts/tools

To preform this procedure, you'll need;

-PSP with a broken screen
-A new screen
-A sturdy philips screwdriver
-Air compressor/canned air
-Toilet paper
-A magnet
-Flat head

Optional
-New faceplate
-Screen Protector

STEP 2: Tear Down

Take out the battery and memory card.

Locate the 5 screws, two on each side, and one in the center.

Now firmly grip your psp, the screws are very tightly screwed in, if you do not apply enough pressure, you can strip the screw.

As you remove the screws, stick them to your magnet

STEP 3: Removing Buttons at the Bottom

Now that your faceplate is off, you need to remove the button on the bottom of the screen.

With your flat head, pry the little clips holding the buttons in place.

Leave the button bar connected to the motherboard.

STEP 4: Extracting the Screen

The screen in held by 4 clips, one at each corner.
You'll need to gently pry the screen out

Once that has been accomplished, flip the screen out towards you.
You need to undo the ribbon cable clamps.
The best way to do this is to use your trusty flathead, CAREFULLY open the clamps.

STEP 5: Place Your New Screen Into Position

Reverse the steps to put the screen in.
Try not to get any finger prints on the new screen.

Connect the ribbon cables to the clamps, insert and close them.

Press the screen into place.

After you pop the screen back, try turning on your psp, if the screen light up, congrats!

If not;
-check the connection to the lcd
-you got shipped a broken screen
-your motherboard is broken (sorry i wasted your time and money :(

STEP 6: Put the Button Bar Back in It's Place

Press the button bar back on, at the bottom of the screen.

Do not scratch the screen.

STEP 7: Clean the Screen

Gently wipe any fingerprints off of the screen, it's okay to get lint on the screen.

Get your air compressor/canned air, blow all the lint from the toilet paper off the screen.

STEP 8: Re-assemble

Check that everything fits, by aligning your faceplate with your psp, adjust if it does not fit.

Grab your canned air/Compressor, blast air under the screen as you press you lower the screen into position. You do NOT want any dust to be trapped in your PSP

Screw the screws into place.

STEP 9: Add Screen Protector

I like to have a clean screen, so i use a screen protector to keep it scratch-free.

Drop the screen protector into place, and squeegee the air out.

Enjoy your fixed PSP

my fourth screw in my psp 1000 wont come out or loosen i dont know what to do

If this is the screw that's at the rear side i think the only single screw in the center i had that problem to what i did was pry the screw away from the where it is located then pried my screen from the screen bracket

no it was the first time i tried it was as if the screw was a different size

if i remember right, all the screws are the same size (except the one in the center of the screen)

try to use a different size screwdriver, and apply preassure
anyone know where to get a PSP-2000 motherboard, ebay sells them for $115, in the long run i think its better to just buy a new one. When I tried to replace the screen following instructions i got from the place i got it, the cracked screen cable ended up pulling the connector off the board. Is it possible to repair the connector if not then ill end up buying a new psp sooner or later, costs too much for the motherboard.

Just buy a used one generally for parts and repair from ebay and take the mother board from that one to use is what i would do the cost for psp parts and repair are priced low enough for what your needing

thanks alex-sharetskiy, I was checking into the connector but they are selling the big connector socket, but I needed the small one. The instructions said to lightly pull the small connector which I did but it took off the connector with 2 of the pins. I contacted the guy on ebay to see if he has a small connector and ill check craigs list. Just wanted to thank you for finding me those links. The second one I am kinda hesitant on used products lol. But really appreciate you looking but the connector part made me interested to look more. thanks

The cheapest i found was on ebay at $11.00

ebay has the cheapest screens, make sure that it's compatible with your version or PSP i got mine for about $20
found one on amazon.com for 15 bucks... Sharp Brand (for the Phat)
those are 'used' screens, they have been pulled from working PSPs
NEW LCD screens for the PSP 1000 can be purchased on amazon (as of this writing) for $17. These screen are OEM "Sharp" and are not used.

Anyway, why doesn't anyone ever mention replacing the dust gasket on these screens? I guess I'll write a "proper" replacement guide for replacing the screen on a PSP 1000, since I didn't find a single complete guide anywhere on the internet.
