Rock Climbing Stick Clip

Intro: Rock Climbing Stick Clip

So you're out at the crag and you've found a sweet new route. The only problem is, the first bolt sits about 15 feet up and you don't particularly feel like decking today. At this point you would usually move on to a safer route but not today! Today you have your handy dandy stick clip you made via Instructables. When others would quiver in the face of adversity, you clip the first bolt from the ground and safely send that sucker.

STEP 1: Materials

Painter's Pole or Trekking Pole (I used a trekking pole because I had an extra laying around, a painter's pole will extend further and would be more desireable)

Tape or Hose Clamps (Again I used tape because I had some laying around, hose clamps would be nice but aren't necessary.

Spring Clamp

STEP 2: Assembly

This is where things get pretty complicated.

Tape your spring clamp to the end of your trekking pole or painters pole.

DONE!

STEP 3: Hanging a Quickdraw

Clip the spring clamp onto the top carabiner making sure to hold the gate open with the clamp as well. Then clip your rope into the bottom carabiner making sure that it won't be back-clipped once you hang the draw. Then simply place the top biner into your bolt hanger ( I used a hook above my closet for illustration) and pull down.

STEP 4: Clipping the Rope Into an Already Hung Quickdraw

Clip a carabiner into the stick clip as pictured. Feed the rope through as pictured. Position the loop around the biner making sure it won't be back-clipped. Pull the rope tight until it opens the gate and falls into place.

STEP 5: Remove a Quickdraw

*Note: this is the hardest maneuver for me and it takes some practice to get it down.

Start like you are going to clip the rope into an already hung draw but use the rope to "grab" the top biner. Once the loop is positioned around the biner, pull it tight enough to open the gate but not tight enough where the rope slips into the biner. Then lift the carabiner off the hanger.

Great Instructable! I made one too! Especially thanks for showing tricks how to use it.

Dude, your intro is pretty funny.
Great idea especially when you dont feel sure and the first fall can harm your legs and mess up the climbig day
nice work!

hope you only clip the first bolt with tis stick. : ) :P
Nice! I've seen the pro versions of these, I never knew you could remove a biner with them too :D
a hair tie or thick rubber band on the end of your poll will work. but only if you need to clip the first bolt.
