My family and I always carve pumpkins for Halloween, and we always save the pumpkin seeds to bake. I guess you could say it's a tradition. So this year I wanted to carve my pumpkin a little different.

Supplies

Large pumpkin

2-3 apples, mini pumpkins, oranges, or tangerines [ any of those will work ]

Scissors

Tape

White paper

Black marker

Lights or a couple fake candles

Carving knife, scaper scoop, and a pumpkin poker [ I don't know the exact name for the last item, so I just called it a pumpkin poker. ]

Skewers 4-6 [ about 4-5 inch long ]

Step 1: Gutting the Pumpkin

First cut a circle around the stem of the pumpkin [ or any other shape, it really doesn't matter which shape you choose. ]

Then scrape the insides of the pumpkin with the scraper scoop, until the inside of the pumpkin is almost completely clean.

You can save the pumpkin seeds and bake them, and you can use the pumpkin guts to make a pie! Although if you made a pie with the guts, it probably wouldn't taste as good as using a pie pumpkin to make a pie.

Step 2: Cutting the Rectangle

Cut a long rectangle in the middle of the pumpkin using the carving knife.

Step 3: Putting the Jail Bars in the Pumpkin

Shove the skewers into the top and bottom of the rectangle.

If the skewers you're using has a sharp top and a flat bottom [ like my skewers ], just use the pumpkin poker and poke a hole where you're planning on putting the skewer(s).

Step 4: Making the Prisoners Hats

Use the black marker to draw a face on either the apples, oranges, mini pumpkins or tangerines.

Take 2-3 tiny pieces of paper [ I just used white sticky notes ], and cut about a quarter off the top of the piece of paper.

Grab the black marker again and draw 3 long black lines on the piece of paper.

Take A small piece of tape and tape both ends of the piece of paper together.

Grab another really small piece of tape and stick both ends together.

Finally put the small piece of tape on the back top part of the apple, orange, mini pumpkin, or tangerine [ basically you want to put the piece of tape behind the stem. ] and put the little prisoner hat on the apple, tangerine, mini pumpkin, or orange.
