Introduction: Rustic Clock

To start I wanted to use this very cool looking piece of wood and I wanted to turn it into a clock. I thought of many possible ideas on how but I ultimately decided on carving a landscape on the top. Then I would just carve out a spot for the clock on the side. The landscape on top is a mountain range from Montana that I recently visited. I found a website called map2stl.com that allowed me to be able to get a STL file of the landscape. From there I downloaded the file into VCarve Pro and set the dimensions of the top of my clock. Then I saved all my toolpaths and carved it out.

Supplies

  • A 4" x 4" x 4" Cube of Wood
  • A 3" Clock (Adjustments if needed)
  • A CNC Machine
  • A copy of VCarve Pro

Step 1: Find Your Landscape

  • Use map2stl.com to find your landscape
  • Download the file


Step 2: Setting the Job Dimensions

  • Set up job dimensions
  • Import STL File of 3D landscape

Step 3: Create the Toolpaths for the CNC Machine

  • Set up Roughing and Finishing Toolpaths
  • Export the Toolpaths to computer or usb

Step 4: Open the File in the CNC Machine and Cut

  • Secure the cube of wood (I used a brace)
  • Let the machine cut!
