Introduction: Rustic Coffee Table From Old Shelf (total Cost $28)
If you want to learn how to turn an old shelf into an amazing coffee table then follow this engaging, step-by-step tutorial! Enjoy!
Materials
-Two pieces of angle iron ($12)
-Square metal tube ($16)
-Old shelf or any other type of wood (in my case $FREE)
-Scrap metal for base (I got some for $FREE)
Step 1: Disassemble
The shelf/rack had a bunch of wooden dowels attaching the two pieces of wood, so I used a hand saw to cut them off. The two pieces of wood both had a small stand on the bottom that were attached by a screw, and when I unscrewed them, they came off.
Step 2: Cutting the Wood to Size
I wanted to cut both pieces of wood in the center, so I used a measuring tape to draw a line across the middle. I then cut this line with a jigsaw, but you could do this with a handsaw if you don't have a jigsaw.
Step 3: Attaching the Pieces of Wood
I found some old pieces of wood in a scrap pile, and I hammered them into the four pieces of the wood from the shelf to hold them in place.
Step 4: Creating the Base
I bought a piece of hollow square steel at Home Depot. My neighbor had some scrap steel that I used for the bottom part of the base. I aligned the square steel on the steel plate and welded them together.
Step 5: Attaching the Angle Iron
I cut the angle iron to size by marking where I wanted to cut. I then drilled two holes on each piece so I could screw them to the wood. I screwed the first angle iron in, but for the second one I had to cut a flat edge on the wood with a saw. After they were both screwed in, I painted the tops of the screws so they wouldn't stand out so much.
Step 6: Attaching the Top to the Base
I'm sorry that I didn't have any pictures of this step, but what I did was drill some holes into a flat piece of steel. I then welded that into the base. Finally, I screwed that onto the top which finished it off.
