Introduction: Rusty Modern Thrifted Table

We spotted an industrial metal and wood side table at our local Starbucks that we thought we could DIY. After we found the perfect table at a thrift store, we used a faux rusty/crusty technique to transform it. We loosely followed a tutorial from Rogue Engineer. (See our full blog post for a link to the tutorial for more information.)

Step 1: Gather Materials

Materials:

  • Black paint--we used a flat black that we had on hand
  • Spray Primer
  • Sand
  • Paintbrush
  • Aged Metallic Rust spray paint (once the paint/sand mixture is dry, randomly highlight areas with this spray paint)
  • Leftover, premixed RockSolid Garage Floor Coating in metallic Silver
  • Sander

Like all projects, this was started with a good cleaning.

The table was sprayed with primer.

Step 2: Create Rust Effect

We used leftover black paint and store bought sand.

We mixed sand into the black paint until we had the consistency we wanted.

Everything, with the exception of the top was painted with the mixture.

Step 3: Create Top

For the top we used leftover metallic floor coating that we had from this project. It's self leveling so the lines didn't show once dry.

Step 4: Done!

This table might have been a long time in the making, but we are happy that inspiration struck and we decided to use the floor coating. The finish is so mirror-like and modern. It was a great use of the leftover floor coating. And Steph found a place for it in her house right away!
