Introduction: Scarred Chair Makeover

About: My artistic life keeps growing and evolving and I love being a part of it as it does. I went from painting little pictures for my son's nursery to mixed media artist with a craft tutorial blog, artsykarma.com.…

My family and I survived a wild fire in Northern California in 2018. Our home and town were destroyed in what was called the Camp Fire.

When my husband and I were able to dig through the ashes of our house, we found a dining chair that had only been charred, strongly enough, so I decided to give it new life and through art, memorialize our experience.

The techniques I used gave it a faux stained glass look that I think turned out really cool.

Supplies

  • piece of wooden furniture
  • white primer
  • acrylic paints
  • black puffy paint
  • two-part epoxy resin
  • acrylic sealer

Step 1: Spray With Primer

I covered the whole chair with a layer of primer. Not only does it give a white background for your colors, it also helps the colors stick to the surface.

Step 2: Paint a Design

I painted it in sections of color using acrylic paint until the the entire seat was painted.

Step 3: Paint the Rest of the Piece

Since, I planned to spray paint the rest of the chair to give it an even coat, I needed to mask my picture. I also wanted the back and legs to have different colors. So I had to tape off sections depending on what part I doing and what color paint I was using.

Step 4: Outline Design in Black Puffy Paint

Once the whole chair had been painted like I wanted, I got to start what I felt was the funnest part of the project.

Since I was going for a stained glass effect, I used black puffy paint as my faux leading.

Step 5: Coat the Project With Epoxy Resin

For the last step I wanted to cover the chair in epoxy resin. Doing that would give it a glassy look, making my stained glass more realistic.

I sprayed with acrylic sealer on the legs and bars.

Step 6: Creativity Heals.
