Intro: Seat Belt Cover

Ever have that problem where your seat belt digs into your neck? I'm pretty sure height has something to do with it. Well I have that problem and I came across a pattern on ravelry.com that I thought was pure genius. If you don't know how to crochet I'm sure you could probably sew one that works just as well. All it really is is a cover to go over your seat belt to cushion where your neck rubs on the belt. This project is perfect for beginners in crochet.

STEP 1: The Pattern

chain 30

row 1: dc in 2nd chain from hook and continue at the end of the of the row chain 2 and turn

row 2- 10: dc in every stitch. at the end of row 10 join a new color of your choice and chain 1 and turn

row 11: sc in every stitch chain 1 and turn row 12: sc in the first 5 stitches, then chain 2 and skip two stitches. sc for the remaining 15 stitches, then chain 2 and skip two stitches. sc in the rest and then slipstitch.

Tuck in any loose strands.

Wrap your crocheted work around the seat belt and find our where to sew on the buttons.

I like your cover, but I have another possibility for keeping the seat belt off your neck:

Go to the dealer and tell them you need a seat belt extension.

Seat belt extensions are made for rotund people in order to make the seat belt fit around their bodies. The dealer is required to supply these for free to anyone who asks for it.

They also work to move the seat belt further across your body so it doesn't rub your neck.

That's very interesting, I wasn't aware of that. I bought my car second hand, would that still apply to me? I just like the idea of the seat belt cover because It has buttons, you can choose to have it on or off. Also it's great for long car rides and you can fall asleep in the back seat without it digging into you.

As far as I know there isn't a cut off date in the age of the car for them to quit supplying the extensions (though I expect there is).
I do know for sure that the vehicle being second hand makes no difference. I've gotten extensions for two second hand vehicles before (a 1998 Buick and a 2006 Ford Escape).
Even if they won't supply it for your vehicle the worst that could come out of you asking the dealer is them saying "Sorry". I think it's worth the risk.

While the idea of a seat belt extension is a good one, for sure, then you wouldn't get to make a cool crochet thing, and that just won't do. :)
