Introduction: Rounded Window Modeling 2 | SelfCAD

Welcome to the next SelfCAD instructable. With this tutorial, we will once again model a rounded window in SelfCAD - an online 3D modeling application.

Step 1: Create New SelfCAD Project

Launch SelfCAD editor and create a new 3D project.

Now you should see the new project settings. Notice that SelfCAD's 1 unit is equal to 1 millimeter. I set Workplace Size to 1500 because it should be enough for my project. Segment Size means the spacing between grid lines. I entered here value 10.

Click the Create button.

If you want you can change the preferences of your project. I prefer to work in the dark editor mode.

Turn on orthographic projection mode.

Step 2: Use Free Hand to Draw a Window Frame

Use Free Hand tool (Drawing → Free Hand or F+H). In Height Settings set the height value to 80 and in Precision Settings turn on Minimum Step Size leaving its value 10. First, draw a rectangle (800mm wide and 900mm high). Then, draw a circle. To find the edge center First draw a circle from the corner, but don't apply it (Picture 2). When you see its radius equals 400, press Esc and draw a circle from this place (Picture 3).

Don't apply the whole drawing yet. Change the mode from Draw to Erase. Draw a similar shape inside the previous one. Keep 80mm distance between both shapes (Picture 4). Then go to Draw mode again and draw a 100mm wide mullion. (Picture 5). Apply the drawing.

Step 3: Draw a Window Sash

Choose Free Hand again and make the previous object visible. Draw a shape 20mm bigger in each direction that hole in the frame (height parameter still equals 80). Notice that you must draw all circles from the same point. It means that this time the center lies outside the figure. When you have a shape like in picture 1, use erase to fix it. Make a hole inside the sash as you did it with the frame. You can also draw muntins inside.

Step 4: Draw Glazing

Use Free Hand last time. Change the height parameter to 20 and draw shapes inside the sash holes.

Step 5: Move the Objects

Use Move (M) to set the position of all three objects like in the image. Change only the Y parameter.

Step 6: Copy the Sash

Select the sash and the glazing. Copy them and use Mirror (Utilities → Mirror or U+I) to rotated copied objects, then move them to the right position. If the new objects are darker then others, it means that Mirror rotated also the normals of the faces of your object. But don't worry, you can flip normals by selecting an object and using Flip (Utilities → Flip or U+F)

    Thanks for taking the time and showing both options. The freehand option is so cool! but I also learned a lot from the first version. Keep it up!
