Step 4: Step 5

After a sufficient amount of time has passed unplug the small nichrome wire transformer. Wait for about 5 minutes with the pump running. Then turn off the pump. Remove the 4 bolts with end cap, paper gasket and sealer. Remove the silicon sliver and clean the clay off the end.

Step 5: Step 6

Clean the end with oxide still on. The end with clay on. Put the diode in the test holder The long ended diodes work as diode in a crystal radio.

Step 6: Step 7

Make a diode with one side of wafer doped with powdered aluminum. Sand the oxide off one side. I used 100 grit sandpaper. I put clay on the other side and wrapped with aluminum foil. The clay and oxide layer prevents aluminum vaper from entering one side. The silicon was broken to size with a piece of aluminum and screw on vise. Silicon fractures somewhat like glass. I used about .5 x .7 inch pieces. I used these diodes with a small ac adapter to convert ac to dc. The forward current was about 100 milliamps with about 1.8 milliamps reverserse current.

Step 7: Summary

Several rare silicon diodes were made. They were used as a rectifier in a crystal radio. These had 1 end , both sides doped with aluminum powder at maybe 1800 degrees farenheit.  The opposite end had clay and wafer oxide to prevent the end from being doped with aluminum powder.  The other diodes were doped on 1 side with powdered aluminum. See the periodic table of elements. The oxide was sanded off and brass contacts were made on both sides. These worked as power supply rectifiers. The oven time was up to about 20 minutes.

I ordered tungsten filaments from lithuania on ebay. Diffusion rates may be on wiki. The transistor leads might possibly be on the same side of the wafer. The leads to the layers would be masked with something. The nearest layer, N could be phosphorous from a match, element number 15. This layer would overdope the previous layer of aluminum , atomic number 13. The time of diffusion of the phosphorous might be the same as for aluminum minus 3 minutes to leave an aluminum, positive base junction. An automatic temperature controller with an infrared thermometer might be necessary. Paragraph. For the diode, it may be possible to use just a propane torch with powdered aluminum covered with foil and clay. paragraph. Microsoft seems to slow sales enough to have quality in computers.

This is a very interesting experiment. Surely you will find new useful things about this matter.
