Introduction: Simple Felt Harry Potter Inspired Bookmarks!

Harry Potter was my first reading experience, and I was amazed at the magic sewn into the story.

However, due to how spellbinding the books are, we can all get a bit lost navigating the wizarding world. So why not have these nifty little guides to aid you through this magical book series?

I've taken this contest as a chance to show my love for the franchise and add more bookmarks to my lacking collection.

This instructable should be, as the name implies, simple! Have fun while crafting these wonderful references to a special side of London.

Step 1: Sock Bookmark

  • Cutting

I draw a rectangle with a length of 14cm and a width of 5.4. At the bottom of the rectangle, I then sketch a foot shape about 9 cm long at an angle. Add a SA of 0.3.

Cut two pieces of black felt, one on the right side and one on the wrong side.

  • Sewing

I used four strands of black embroidery floss for the stitching (for strength), but normal thread works fine.

Pin the wrong sides together, and blanket stitch the pieces together.

You can sew the whole bookmark shut or leave the top open for secret messages! (Blanket stitch the individual ends to prevent fraying).

And with that, the bookmark is finished!

Now you can use this charming bookmark to remember your last diary entry, or to set your local houself free!

Step 2: Deathly Hallows Corner Mark

  • Cutting

Take a square of white felt and cut two equilateral triangles, sides 10.5 cm long with a base of 15 cm and a height of 7.5cm. This will be the cloak.

Using a protractor I measure 3.1cm and draw a circle on paper which I then use as a pattern to cut a circle out of black felt. This will be the stone.

  • Sewing

Take the black felt and split stitch a silver line (3 strands, silver 3747) into its middle. This is the wand.

Position the black circle on the triangle until happy and backstitch it down.

//Tip: you can also use a whip/blanket stitch for extra strength and to reduce fraying.//

Take the two triangles, the wrong sides touching, and blanket/backstitch them together.

Hey presto! Become the master of death with this sweet bookmark!

Step 3: Rectangle Bookmark Pt 1

  • Cutting

I cut a rectangle out of paper with a length of 17cm and a width of 4cm (plus 0.5 SA) and lay that over the fabric I wish to use.

I measured 1.5cm with a protractor, drew a paper circle and cut the paper as a template for the glasses lenses.

  • Marking

This time I use my water-soluble marker to trace the rectangle onto my fabric.

I made some mistakes but that's alright! I'll wash the ink off later. (when washing off the ink and drying the fabric the bookmark may shrink, so watch out!)

  • Embroidery

The glasses:

I take two strands of red thread (349) and line the outline with a running stitch. Leaving approx 0.3 gaps in between. //Tip: weave the leftover strands under the previous stitches. Do not pierce the fabric!//

Repeat with the yellow thread.

The stars:

I take two strands of gold thread (833) and tie them off.

The stars are simple, just some crossing lines! I add the stars wherever I wish and tie them off.

Step 4: Rectangle Bookmark Pt 2

  • Washing and drying

I first wash and rinse the ink off using warm water (this can take a bit so be patient!)

I then pat it dry with a towel and leave it to air-dry. The fabric may shrink, so watch out for that!

  • Sewing

I pin the pieces, wrong sides together and blanket stitch across with a dark blue sewing thread. Go carefully over the corners.

I tie off and boom! Reading has never been easier with these specs and Hermione won't have to cast a single spell!

Step 5: The End!

That brings us to the end of our journey! Now explore Harry's world and embark on foretold adventures together, equipped with the perfect defence against lost passages. No flu powder or hats with swords necessary!
