Simple Hot Wire Foam Cutter

Hello everyone,

In this instructable we will be going make hot wire foam cutter using A 9V battery and a Nichrome wire only.

It's really simple and easy to make it but, It works awesome.

Before we continue, I would like to thank instructable member clement.fletcher for his awesome Hot wire foam cutter.

His instructable inspired me to document my Hot Wire Foam Cutter as I was making it.

I modified it and made it even simpler without any additional parts and also made it handy.

Step 1: Supplies

To make a Hot Wire Foam Cutter we will need:

1. A 9V battery
2. A Nichrome wire (I used an insulated nichrome wire.)
3. Small wooden sticks (I used matchsticks.)
4. Hot glue or Tape. (I used Masking Tape.)

Step 2: Build the Foam Cutter

Stick the wooden sticks at the top and bottom of the 9V battery using Hot Glue or Tape.

Then attach the Nichrome wire to the sticks referring to the pictures.

Step 3: Done

Now you have successfully made your Foam Cutter all you need is to test it.

I used a scrap piece of Foam to test the Foam Cutter, As soon as the wire is attached to the battery it becomes Red-Hot and cuts the Foam efficiently.

I keep doing this. The battery gets hot, the wire does not. What am I doing wrong?

what gauge nichrome wire used with 9v battery

What gauge NiChrome wire are you using, pray tell?

Instead of 9V battery, you should use some other type of battery like a lead acid battery or li-ion battery. These battery have far more capacity than 9V batteries and can provide power for a longer time.

But at least they work! A PP3 battery is really too small to be annoying it with a load like this.

Also, consider that the PP3 will last VERY little time, in the long run PP3 batteries will cost you more.
