Simple Modern Coffee Table

This is not a crazy complicated coffee table. I wanted something minimalist that was simple. So I decided to use 8/4 poplar and some hairpin legs. I did want to add a little character, so I used the Slab Sticher to add a walnut bowtie. (Check out the video on the Slab Sticher below.)

Step 1: Step 1 - Flattening and Cutting Lumber

First step I took was getting the lumber prepared for the glue up. I ran it through my jointer, planer, and table size to get it to the right dimension. I used my router sled to flatten the big poplar piece that will be the center.

Once I got the lumber to the right thickness and width, I was ready for the glue up.

Step 2: Step 2 - Glue Up

Time to glue up the lumber. I used Titebond III just because that is why I prefer. I find it to hold the best. The pattern I used was a 13" wide piece in the middle, and two 2" pieces on each side. So the coffee table will end up being 17" wide by the end. Once the piece has sit in the parallel clamps for about 12 hours, its time to take it out and add the bow tie.

Step 3: Step 3 - Using the Slab Sticher

This was the first time I used the Slab Sticher. It blew me away how simple it is to use. I will be using it more. Takes no time and it actually makes it hard not too have a tight fit. Its amazing. Check out the video.

Step 4: Step 4 - Sanding and Finishing

After the bow-tie was finished, I sanded the entire coffee table with 80 grit. Then I repeated the sanding process with 120, then 220. I cleaned the piece with mineral spirits, which helped raise the grain. Re-sanded with 220. I then applied the finish. I used an oil Polyurethane and applied several coats with sanding in between.

Step 5: Step 5 - Attaching Legs - Finishing It Up

Last step is to attach the legs! and that's it. Super simple design but we love it. It looks clean in our living room and that was the goal.
