Simple Wood and Iron Pipe Tool

This is a quick (30 mins including glue curing time) and cheap (0 pesos) project.

I have a pipe and was in dire need of a proper packing/cleaning tool, so I made one. The tobacco box you see in the back was also the object of an instructables.

Let's go!

Step 1: Reuse an Old File

For the metal part, I used an old rusted file that I cut in two and cleaned up with a wire brush and on the beltsander.

This metal poker will be used for removing the charred tobacco that accumulates in the pipe's bowl.

Step 2: Insert in the Piece of Wood

I then inserted it in a dowel in which I drilled a slot with the dremel. I added a slice of a different wood with a small hole to hide the big slot and make for a better looking finish. I glued everything together with 5 minutes epoxy.

Step 3: Sanding on the Beltsander

There is no good picture here because it was moving fast, but you basically shape the whole thing the way you want on the beltsander. Mind your fingers! ;)

I kept the botttom part round and sanded it down to a diameter that would allow it to fit inside the pipe's bowl for packing tobacco.

Step 4: Finish

I finished it with a coat of a 2:1 paraffin oil:hexane mix, to give it a nice yet food safe finish.

(Total disclosure would be that I use nothing else than this finish. Ever.)

Ah, I wish. No, it's a medico churchwarden i bought in an antique store for 6 bucks. But now that I have a lathe (https://www.instructables.com/id/Drill-Press-to-Lathe-With-a-Bit-of-Scrap-Wood/) I'll probably turn my own pipes!
