Introduction: Smart Light Adapter-PIR Based

Are you not willing to re-wire your home for smart lighting or not interested to spend lots of budget for smart lighting system, then this DIY project is for you. This simple adapter converts normal bulb into smart Bulb, by using a PIR sensor. The mounting of the sensor is done in such a way that the angular position of the sensor can be adjusted, so that, the original position of the batten holder does not affect the sensing of human passage. This is achieved using a 3.5 mm stereo jack and its socket. However, this type of mounting is up to your will and wish. This can be eliminated and wired directly.

Step 1: Components Required

1. Batten holder Adapter & Hanging type Bulb holder

2. 230V AC to 5V,500 mA DC Adapter-A standard mobile phone charger circuit

is sufficient.

3. 5V DC relay

4. Transistor-BC 547

5. Resistor 330 Ohm ¼ watt

6. Diode-1N 4007

7. 3.5 mm Stereo jack connector pair

8. PIR sensor

9. 2” X 1” General purpose PCB

10. Plastic Enclosure:- A 2-Way Switch box is sufficient (3”X2.5”X1.5” Aprox.)

11. Plastic enclosure for PIR sensor:-Here an old jewellery box is used(2”X1.5”X1.5” )Approx.

Step 2: About PIR Sensor

  • PIR Sensor is a motion detector, which detects movement of human and triggers its output to High state. It operates in two modes. The mode is selected by the jumper provided on the rear side of the sensor PCB.

  • Normal Mode: When the sensor detects motion, it sets output to High until set time and re-sets output to Low, independent of the movements during the output HIGH time. This is One-time triggering mode.
  • Re-Triggering Mode: When the sensor detects motion, it sets output to High until set time and re-sets output to Low, but if it detects motion during its output High state, it again triggers the timer making it to count from zero.
  • The ON time and Sensing range can be adjusted using the presets provided in the sensor.
  • If you are using this sensor for the first time,then spend some time with the sensor and understand its working modes and sensing ranges.

Step 3: Fixing the Adapters

  • Open the adapter and measure the diameter of the threaded portion
  • On the bottom of enclosure, draw a square whose length of a side is equal to the diameter measured.
  • Limit the corner parts of the square and cut away to insert the adapter.
  • The adapter must be placed such that, the contact pins are in parallel with the wall of the enclosure. Use instant sticking glue to fix it (if necessary)
  • Similary, fix the holder on the top of the enclosure.
  • Make sure that, the connecting terminals of the holder and adapter are not in contact.
  • It is better to place them apart as shown.

Step 4: Fixing the 3.5 Mm Socket

  • Make a hole on the side wall of the enclosure to which sensor need to be fixed.
  • Now, screw up the socket.

Step 5: Mounting the Sensor

  • Measure the diameter of the Fresnel lense part (white colour part).
  • Similar to the adapter, cut away the enclosure chosen for sensor.
  • Place the sensor from inside of the enclosure such that, lense comes out of the wall.
  • Make a hole sufficient to insert the 3.5 mm jack and insert the jack before soldering the wires.

Step 6: Connections

  • Connect the holders and PCBs as per the connection digram.
  • Place the SMPS and relay PCB and stick them using glue stick/gun.
  • Solder 3.5 mm jack to the sensor as per the diagram and screw-up the jack.
  • Wire-up the adapter and holder.
  • Now, insert the sensor into adapter.

Step 7: Prototype

  • The sensor can be rotated 360 Degrees continously
  • Just insert in to the existing bulb holder and switch ON.
  • Stay away from sensor for a minute for calibration.
  • Leave the switch in ON position.
  • Your normal light becomes smart light.
