Introduction: Sock Cat DIY. Handmade Gift for Kids

About: Hi! My name is Irina. I speak English, Russian & German. I have been making DIY videos for my Youtube channel for 4 years (channel name is You Can Do It Craft). There is not such a craft that I can't tackl…

Here is my sock cat project. This cat is not just a simple soft toy, it jingles and crinkles!

I made it for my little son when he was 11 months old. Now he is 15 months old and still loves this plumpy little friend. I think such a toy can be a nice handmade gift for kids of different age. I made another one for my six-year-old daughter and she was happy :)

You will need:

  • A pair of socks (the bigger the sock size the bigger a toy will be);
  • Thread and a needle;
  • Stuffing (polyester fiber fill/ hollow fiber or similar);
  • Embroidery thread for the face;
  • A piece of a plastic bag;
  • A jingle bell (not necessary if a toy is planned for a kid older than 2-3 years).

Below you will find my video tutorial and step-by-step photos.

Step 1: Video Tutorial

Step 2: Take a Pair of Socks, Turn Inside Out and Cut According to the Scheme

Step 3: Sew the Open Edges With a Back Stitch

I recommend to use the back stitch because it is strong and the analog of a machine stitch. If you have a sewing machine you can, of course, use it for this step.

Step 4: Turn the Details Right Side Out and Stuff With Polyester Fiber Fill (except the Tail)

Step 5: Insert a Jingle Bell Inside the Body Detail

Step 6: Take a Piece of a Polyester Bag, Put Some Polyester-fiber Stuffing on Top of It and Wrap. Than Insert in the Tail Detail.

Step 7: Embroidery the Cat Face

I embroidered the face because I made this toy for a little kid. If a kid doesn't put everything in the mouth :) , buttons can be used for eyes.

Step 8: Sew the Opening in the Head Shut

Step 9: Ladder Stitch (invisible Stitch) the Head, Arms and Tail to the Body

Step 10: A Handcrafted Sock Cat Is Ready

Hope this tutorial will be useful!
