Introduction: Stain Glass Window Bookmark

The other day I found some plastic covers used for covering bound books and it got me thinking; could I write on this with permanent marker? One thing lead to another and here we are with a bookmark that looks like those big stain glass windows that you see in big fancy churches. Well this is a far simple version, but it still looks just as amazing. The pattern made here is simple however if you are feeling courageous you can create much complex patterns using the same steps. Weather you like reading or like making things this project is quite easy to follow.

Step 1: Tools and Materials

What you will need:

  • Various coloured Permanent Markers (in this case I used Sharpies, but any permanent marker should work)
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Fine black permanent marker (I used black nail polish as this is what I had available)
  • Plastic sheet
  • Clear Nail polish (Optional)

Step 2: Cut the Plastic

Cut the plastic sheet to the desired size. Here I cut it the plastic sheets to 12 cm x 4 cm.

Note: the plastic sheets used here are textured, however a clear plastic sheet can be used as a substitute.

Step 3: Draw on the Desired Pattern

Draw your desired pattern on the plastic sheet in pencil. Here I ruled lines vertically and horizontally with about 0.5 to 1 cm spacing between each line. I alternated with the amount of spacing between the vertical lines to create a pattern.

Step 4: Colouring of the Bookmark

With the coloured markers colour in the bookmark in whatever desired pattern. I do recommend using darker coloured markers as the colour is more visible on the plastic sheet. Continue this step until the bookmark is filled.

Step 5: Add Second Layer

Let it dry and repeat this step again to obtain a more vibrant colour. 2 layers should create enough vibrancy, however you can add more if required.

Alternatively colouring the other side of the bookmark can achieve vibrancy of colour.

Step 6: Outlining the Bookmark

Outline the design with a black marker or in my case black nail polish. Black marker would be ideal as it does last longer, however the black nail polish does give the bookmark a stain glass window texture. Once dry, the black line work can be gone over again to create a more thicker black line. Or alternatively the border of the bookmark can be outline too.

Step 7: Optional Step

Add a layer of clear nail polish to give a reflective finish. This can also be applied on both sides of the bookmark.

Step 8: Finished Outcome

Wait for the bookmark is completely dry before using.
