Intro: Steam Bath

Hi and thanks for reading,

I have always wanted a steam bath, but I never wanted to pay 3500 to 7000 for one.  So I got bored and tried to make one.  It turned out good, very simple, lots of steam, but only for an outdoor environment.  It is also very portable, so its easy to pack up and take to the cabin!

STEP 1: Materials

1 outdoor turkey frier
1 large stock pot with lid
1 10' length of 1/2" inside diameter automotive heater hose
various plumbing fittings (I dont know what they were called, i just went to the hardware store and looked for what will work)
1 hose clamp
1 tent or similar (I used my hunting blind to try it out)

STEP 2: Making the Boiler

Take the lid off the pot and drill a hole for the fitting to attach the hose.  See pictures.

Now the hard work is done. lol

STEP 3: Time to Have a Nice Steam

Lets take a steam.

First we need to fire up the frier.

Now we take the stockpot and fill 3/4 with water.

I set up blind and laid the end of the hose on the ground inside.

Now wait around 15 minutes for the steam to start and take a nice steam!

STEP 4: Safety

Do not leave unattended!

Be careful of any metal in the steam room, they could get hot.

Make sure you are aware of the location and direction of the steam hose.

Make sure not to stay too long, you can get heat stroke or dehydrate.

Be cautious of the floor, the steam might make it slick.

STEP 5: After Thoughts

AHHHHH, I just enjoyed a nice 15 minute steam. 

I was thinking, in the steam bath ;) , that almost any small enclosed area could be the steam room, a small shed or a tent.  I also thought that the turkey frier is not necessary, setting the stock pot above a small fire could also work (more caution would be needed with a fire).

I was also very surprised how little water was used, I only boiled away about 1 liter of water.

It's not the most elegant looking steam bath but I hope some people can enjoy my silly idea, have fun and be safe.

I bought all the materials and set it up. But it still isnt producing enough steam in my small four person tent I had.

Realized the hose I bought is an automotive FUEL hose and not an automotive HEATER hose. Could that be the issue???

Please help!!!

What are you using for boiling the water?

I am using an outdoor burner similar to the one in your pic. It's a burner that it used to boil huge pots if crawfish and crabs-- as I grew up in S.Lousiana and that's a must have...

Mine puts out 40000 btu. But I did have to let it go for 10-15 minutes to get steaming before I went in.

I picked up a hand held steam cleaner at a garage sale for 8 bucks. It had a hose for using attachments. I put a cable tie on trigger and slid hose under the tent. One of thise portable clothes steamers would also work great.

HI - I haven't been in a steam room for a while so can you tell me if enough steam is produced to be able to soap-and-rinse off ?

I saw an invention a while ago (possibly a theoretical scenario) where a water fog was/could be created instead of a shower of water to wash/rinse in. Essentially a low water use hygiene invention.!

Steam showers will let you lather up. But you won't be able to properly rinse off. You'll need a bucket of water or garden hose or similar to rinse off.

You know, this is pretty ghetto, but the ease at which you made it is cool. And I like that there's no boiling hot pot or fire in the tent with you, that always seems too dangerous.
