Welcome to my Insturctables on how to make a Surfers Mini Kick board – a combination of a Surf Board and a Kick Board. I've always wanted to surf but never got the chance so in order to fulfill my dreams I have created this. In order to make your own Mini Kick board, you will need:

Materials

· A 60 x 20 x 2.0 cm Wooden board

· A bit of scrap wood (for optional fins) I used plywood

Tools

· A Pencil

· A Measuring Tape

· A Belt Sander, Electric Sander or Sand Paper (NOT RECOMMENDED)

· A Drill (I used 2)

· Drill Bits

· A Jig Saw

· A Heat Gun

· A Candle

· A Hot Glue Gun

· A Right-Angle

· Screws (size will vary depending on your board and fins)

· Paint (optional)

· Tape (optional)

· A File (optional)

· An Angle Grinder (optional)

· Perhaps some extra tools to fix any problems you run into

Step 1: Make Your Marks

The first step to making your contraption is to draw out the

model.

Start by making a mark 60 cm from the bottom of your board, this is where the tip of your board will be. Using your right angle tool and pencil draw a line across your board at the mark you just made.

Make another mark 20 cm down from the nose of your board and once again using your Right-Angle draw a line across your board.

For this next part you can draw by hand, or if you want your board super precise you can use a compass. Mark the center of the line at the top of your board and make a curve down to the 20 cm mark you made earlier. Your wooden board will already start looking like a Kickboard, all you need to do now is make another mark 10 cm from the bottom, and one more 2-4 cm from the side (also at the bottom). Once again using the same technique, draw a curved line connecting the two new marks you just made. Your board should look like the one in the picture now. If it does then congratulations!!! You’ve reached the next step!

Step 2: Cutting

Cutting out your board is the absolute smallest problem.

Simply take a Jig Saw and get cutting! Follow the lines precisely to get an excellent cut! I won’t spend much time on this step since there’s nothing I can tell you about it. If you don’t know how to use a Jig Saw there are plenty of good websites and articles/videos on this topic.

Step 3: Sanding Down Your Board

Using your sanding tool of choice sand down the bottom of the board to give it a nice round edge, also smooth down the rest of the board to give it a nice texture and remove all the possible splinters from the board. Start with a 40 grit and paper and make your way up. I stopped at 240 grit and boy was it smooth!

Step 4: Making the Fins

WOW!!! We’re already here, making the fins! That didn’t take so long, did it?

To start making the fins trace down a quick sketch of them onto a piece of 0.5 mm thick wood. I used plywood, but you can use whatever you want.

Cut out the fins and use an angle grinder, belt sander, file, or even sand paper to sharpen the fins. We’ll leave the fins here but there will be some additional work necessary to attach the fins to your board.

Step 5: Attaching the Fins

You’re almost done!

Start by measuring out 5 cm and 7 cm down the center from the bottom of your board (these marks will be used for the removable fin you made earlier).

Using a 3 mm drill bit (or a drill bit corresponding to your screws), drill holes on the marks you made earlier. Using the same drill bit, drill two corresponding holes into your fins, but not all the way through.

Step 6: Waxing/Waterproofing

THE FINAL STEP!!!! (Obviously, aside from using it).

Thoroughly rub a candle all around your board. Make sure you get as much wax on the board as you can.

Once you have covered your board in wax, use a heat gun to melt the wax. You will that the wax has melted if the board has changed color into a darker shade.

Repeat this step one more time, doing so to every side of the board.

*Do not forget the sides of the board.

If you want your board to really last, then spraying it with a few coats of spar varnish will make all the difference and make it completely waterproof.

Congratulations!! You have complete your Mini Surfers Kickboard! Now get out there, go try out your masterpiece.
