Introduction: T-Shirt Tote Bag

About: I am a conceptual artist, and my DIY projects are mostly inspired by pop culture (movies, music, sports, TV). I mostly specialize in painting, graphic design, drawing, digital photography, performance art, and…

Make the most of your summer vacation (and your old clothes) by upcycling an old t-shirt into a fashionable tote bag!

Step 1: Get Your Materials

What you'll need for your t-shirt tote bag are...

  • sewing machine
  • an old t-shirt
  • leather straps
  • scissors
  • Optional: extra fabric for the lining

Step 2: Prep T-Shirt

Start by cutting the t-shirt into 2 separate pieces. Just cut from the bottom of the neckline, and cut off the sleeves.

Step 3: Make the Tote Bag

Next, place the t-shirt front (with the design on it) face down on the blank back of the shirt. Then, using at least a 1/2" seam allowance, sew the sides and bottom of the shirt, leaving the top open. Then, fold the seams on top in and sew using a straight stitch.

Note: You can also add a piece of fabric on top of the shirt for the lining. I didn't do that part, but that one is up to you.

Step 4: Add Straps

Finally, add straps to the top of the bag. I used these leather straps that came from a blanket bundle.

Step 5: Complete!

Now, you can stash your tote bag with your wallet, change purse, or whatever you bring with you the most. Just be careful not to put too many things in it, as this will cause the delicate bottom of the bag to break at the seams.
