Step 1: VANILLA CAKE
396g / 1 & 3/4 Cups Unsalted Butter
400g / 2 Cups Granulated Sugar
6 Large Eggs
406g / 3 & 1/4 Cups Self-Raising Flour
2tsp Vanilla Extract
6tbsp Milk
Beat the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy. Slowly add in the eggs one at a time. Sift in the flour and mix until everything is incorporated. Finish by adding in the vanilla extract and milk and beat again for another 30 seconds. Bake at 190 degrees C / 374 degrees F for 25 - 30 minutes. Leave to cool completely.
Step 2: CHOCOLATE ORANGE BUTTERCREAM
170g / 3/4 Cups Unsalted Butter
375g / 3 Cups Icing Sugar
120g / 1 Cup Dark Chocolate
1/2tsp Orange Zest
1/2 Orange
4tbsp Heavy Cream
1tsp Vanilla Extract
Melt the dark chocolate and leave to cool slightly. Beat the butter until it turns pale. Slowly add the icing sugar and beat for 10 minutes until the mixture doubles in volume. Add the melted chocolate, orange juice, zest and vanilla extract. Finish by adding in the heavy cream and bear for another 2-4 minutes.
Step 3: FROST & DECORATE
Fondant: Orange, White, Black, Red, Pink, & Pale Orange
Use a template to carve out Darwin's face. Cut the cake in half. Frost the cake and create a crumb coat before leaving to chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. Apply another layer of buttercream before scraping off any excess. Roll out the fondant and cut out Darwin's facial features. Cover the cake in the orange fondant and place Darwin's facial features on top.

Oh my gosh, that thing is adorable! And it sounds delicious! Just one quick question, for the frosting, when you say "1/2 Orange" do you mean 1/2cup Orange Juice or do you throw in 1/2 of an orange? Thanks!

Hi, I meant 1/2 of an orange. Sorry that it wasn't clear!

No problem! Just wanted to check because you then mention orange juice in the directions for making the frosting :)
