Introduction: The Easiest Way to Grow Avocado From a Seed

About: Hi there! Thanks for stopping by. I'm new here, but I have been crafting various things in my spare time. I try to up-cycle existing materials or use natural elements whenever possible. I hope you enjoy my pr…

Hi everybody,

In this Instructable, I will show you how to easily propagate avocado - no toothpicks, no paper towels, no fertiliser, and very little time and supplies required. You can propagate multiple pits at a time, to grow as many avocado trees as you like. The pits require very little care, just some water from time to time. It's a nice way to try and get as many varieties of avocados as you can :)

Supplies

- avocado pits, as many as you have. You can always add more later! And if you end up with too many trees, they make a wonderful gift :)

- a knife and a cutting board

- a shallow dish, I used an old Tupperware container

Step 1: Isolate and Prepare the Pit

Wash and cut avocado in half. The variety of avocado does not really matter, try to experiment with different ones! Remove the pit by gently squeezing the avocado half. Be careful, it might be slippery! Use a paper towel to wipe the white residue from the surface of the pit, so that the pit is less slippery. The surface of the pit should now look shiny (see picture).

Use a knife to carefully remove the skin from the pit. There is usually a thick groove running around the surface of the pit (see picture). Push the blade of the knife into the groove, this will make it easier for the roots to come out.

Step 2: Place Pit(s) in Water

Put the pit(s) in a shallow dish. Add enough water so the bottom part of the pits is covered by about half an inch of water. Put them in a warm place, where they can get some light. I placed mine on a windowsill. Now the pits can be pretty much left unattended, just make sure the water does not dry out. In a couple of weeks, the pit will start to crack and the root will appear.

Step 3: Transfer the Pit Into Soil

Once the pits have cracked and the roots have emerged, you can transfer the pits to a pot. Put some soil in and moisten the top of it. Now the avocado will grow faster, since it has access to nutrients. Put it in a sunny place and keep the top layer of soil moist. I have also put some into my terrarium, the moss in there keeps the pits nice and moist!

Step 4: You Are Done!

You have now successfully propagated an avocado pit. Soon enough, it will turn into a beautiful avocado tree, just wait for it to grow and bring you yummy avocados. Although it might take some time, the results will be worth it! Avocado toast for life :)
