Introduction: The MINOX NAS a Bit of DIESELPUNK

I am travelling a lot and spend a lot of time in hotels.Often for more than a week.

The evenings could be boring so I like to have my movie, music and photo collection with me.

There are lots of WLAN hard disks on the market but I like to build my own stuff.

I am using a Banana Pi because it has a SATA port and a power outlet for the SATA HDD on board.

Material you need:

  • BANANA Pi
  • SATA cable for B-Pi
  • 2 TByte SATA HDD
  • 8 GByte SD card
  • Operating system "OpenMediaVault" a special build for the Banana PI
  • 2 plates of plastic or vulcan fibre
  • some distance holders
  • screews, nuts and bolds

Step 1: Building It in Two Layers

I decided to use a 2TByte HDD formatted with NTFS. So it is able to remove the HDD and connect it via USB to any PC. Than it is very easy to fill the disk with media very fast using an USB 3.0 adapter.

Due to this fact I am using thumb screws to make the removal of the HDD very easy.

The image can be "burned" to the SD card using WIN32DiskImager.

A tutorial how to configure the server can be found here: click

Step 2: The Case

The mounting inside the case was easy. Just 4 thumb screws.

The server is very silent and due to the GBit LAN very fast. In the hotel room I am connecting the server to UMTS/LTE modem and access it via the WLAN of the modem.

As the case I am using an old case for a MINOX digital camera.
