Introduction: The Robot Workshop

About: High school student in USA!

I wanted to create a rendering of a futuristic robot awakening in a futuristic workshop. I had experience with designing in both Blender and Fusion 360, but I have never actually textured or rendered images in Blender. I started by sketching out what I wanted on my computer. For the light element, I wanted the light from the robot, the lamp and the tvs to play major roles.

Supplies

I used Fusion 360 to model, and Blender for further modeling, texturing and finally rendering.

Additional tools: Meshy, Mixamo

Step 1: Table

I started by modeling the table in fusion 360

Step 2: The Robot

I then modeled the robot by starting in blender, and adding finishing touches in Fusion 360

Step 3: Wrench

I then modeled the wrench in Fusion.

Step 4: TV Box

I then decided to swap out one of the TVs for a box with buttons, so I modeled that in Fusion.

Step 5: Lamp

After that, I modeled my lamp in Fusion.

Step 6: TVs

Then I modeled the TVs in Fusion.

Step 7: Texturing

I used Meshy to texture my robot.

Step 8: Rigging

I used Mixamo to generate rigs for my robot.

Step 9: Putting It Together

I then put together the scene in Blender. For the lamp's lightbulb, I used a sphere, and for the TVs, I used a meatball to give a realistic shape to the screens.

Step 10: Texturing, Making Glow

I then downloaded some free textures. (Wood, Metal [blue], Metal [rusted brown]). I added textures to my components, and made my tv screens and lamp glow. Here I realized that I didn't know how to make the robot's eye glow, so I have to change my plans.

Step 11: Rigging Robot

I went into pose mode, and rigged the robot to look like it is sitting down.

Step 12: Moving Camera

I then moved the camera to a good place to take a shot.

Step 13: Camera Mode

I then changed to camera mode, but realized there was too much light, so I deleted the light Blender automatically provides.

Step 14: Changing Light Intensity

I realized that the light from the screens and lamp was too strong, so I lowered the intensity.

Step 15: Darker Scene

I realized that the scene was too bright, and light wasn't given enough importance.

Step 16: Window

To add more light, I started by creating a window in Fusion

Step 17: Adding It to Scene

I then changed the planes, to add the window to the scene.

Step 18: Light Source

I started by creating the light source, (in Blender), to be a tube light for a futuristic look.

Step 19: Plane

I then added a plane behind it make it look light nighttime.

Step 20: Tube Light (part 2)

I then changed the tube light to look a little bit more realistic

Step 21: Rendering Change

Nearing completion, I changed from Evee to Cycles for a more realistic look

Step 22: Completion

With the changes made, I was happy with my finished product, albeit it took several hours to render the image with Cycles.

Step 23: Final Words

Going into this, I had never textured or rigged an animation before, and all in all I am very happy with the way it turned out. I still have a lot to learn, I am more confident with these concepts going forwards. I especially like the way the shadows fall on the scene.
