Introduction: The Correct Way to Peel a Banana
Often times people peel bananas from the stem down. This causes them to bruise and get mushy after a few attempts. Monkeys do not peel bananas like this. They peel them from the top down.
Here are some steps and images to explain the process.
Step 1: Locating the Top!
Make sure to find the end of the banana opposite from the stem.
Step 2: Pinching the Top Off
This is where you will be starting to open up the banana without bruising or mashing it. Take your thumb nail and press it into the black part of the top. Use your pointer finger as a wall to pry it up.
Step 3: Peel It Back
Once you've gotten the top part off, start to peel it back towards the stem.
Step 4: Peel Back the Other Parts
Now you can peel back the rest of the parts of the banana peel
Step 5: Enjoy!
Now join your monkey brethren and eat your unbruised, un-mashed banana with joy!

for the first time in 43 years, my last few bananas has a weird core when I got down to the black end. Discusting and freaky texture. So I tried this was. I like how there is now a handle to hold. However, I still had strings, which some of you said would not exist. Will take me a few times not to smash the end.

Just look at any picture of Curoius George with a banana and you will see that this is the correct way to peel a banana!

If you use the opener ("stem") on the other end of it, you can keep your nails clean ;)

you don't agree with people who prefer opening from the stem... yet you try opening from the other end and it doesn't work for you...
...So you are incapable of eating bananas and feel hostile towards anyone who can? lol

I found the stings to be more of a problem when I peeled it from the top rather than the stem.

In another comment you say you tried this method, and it didn't work for you.
You then comment on someone else who did not like the method, the very one you tried and it didn't work... saying that they found something to be the case (not claiming it to always absolutely be the case). You're really going to argue that someone talking about their personal experience is wrong? You think you have a better understanding of a stranger's experience than they have themselves?

I just tried it, and was not really convinced until I got to the end of eating my banana, where I could hold on to the stem instead of having nothing to hold on to. That was indeed an improvement. I will teach this way to my kids.
That said, I like the satisfying crunch from digging your thumbnail into the stem and then breaking it (the stem, not the thumbnail)

You know, most people cut their fingernails. This wouldn't work for those people.
Also, can't say I've ever experienced opening from the stem causing bruising

After travelling extensively in Central America, I can confirm that this is indeed the way that monkeys peel bananas. Do you doubt the wisdom of the mono?

If you've got thumbnails at all you can always dig your thumbnail in a little to the inner curved part of the stem right where it meets the banana. Once there's a cut there, it's easy to peel the stem back from it without mushiness. I can't see how this way is a lot better... maybe it's easier to take the black bottom part off if you have short thumbnails?
