Introduction: Time Vortex Manipulator

About: I like to crochet and I occasionally knit. I want to become an archeologist and I am also a twin. We like comic books and constantly root for the villains and their henchmen ; )

The Time Vortex Manipulator is a portable time machine featured on the show Doctor Who. With just a push of a button, you will be transported back in time or transported far into the future. When it first was introduced in the show, my sister begged me to take on the burden of designing a crocheted version. I got the idea from a superhero cuff sewing pattern and crochet pattern for a knights hat. After I had the base and inside platform, all I had to do is sew on the buttons and make a flap. I decided later that it would look better if the base and the flap were one piece. Enjoy making your own Time Vortex Manipulator and share it with your friends and family. No Doctor Who fan should go without it!

Step 1: Materials

the materials you're going to need for this project are:

  • Brown, Light grey, Grey, Blue, and Orange yarn
  • Size F Crochet hook (or size G hook)
  • Large Yarn needle and an Embroidery needle for the buttons
  • Two brown or black buttons
  • Scissors

Abbreviations:

Hdc: Half double crochet

Dc: double crochet

Sc: single crochet

Ch: chain

Step 2: Starting Your Time Vortex Manipulator

With Brown, Ch 13

Row 1-28: Sc in both loops across, Ch 1, turn.

Row 29: Sc in front loop only across, Ch 1, turn.

Row 30-41: Sc in both loops across, Ch 1, turn (at the end of row 41, ch 2 and turn.)

Row 42: Dc across.

Fasten off

Step 3: Sewing the Time Vortex Manipulator and Adding the Buttons

Try it on and see if it fits. Take it off and fold at row 29 where you single crocheted in the front loop. Sew the pieces together using the back loops as a guide (I forgot to take pictures of this step.) Now fold the flap down and mark where the buttons will go. Then sew on the buttons. Next, make the button holes by putting the buttons into one of the holes in the double crochet. Tip: turn the Time Vortex Manipulator inside out and tie off the yarn. This will hide all the knots and make it look better.

Step 4: The Inside Platform and the Control Buttons

For the side platform, you will need Grey yarn

Hdc 9 in a magic circle. (click here for tutorial on how to make a magic circle but instead of single crocheting, half double crochet in the circle.)

Ch 1 and Sc in the same stitch and in the next two Sc, Ch 1 and turn.

Sc in next three stitches, Ch 1 and Slip stitch all the way around the circle, ending at the first Sc in the row that you just did.

Now for the buttons: you will need Blue, Orange and Light grey yarn

Make one blue screen in the right corner of the left platform make a blue dot in between both platforms and an orange screen in the right corner of the right platform making sure to make one side of the orange screen round (see picture.) Then, with light grey yarn, make a circle following the circle you made when making the magic circle. Make a diagonal button to the right of the circle, and once you're done with that, make two diagonal buttons side-by-side on top of the orange screen (see pictures of the Time Vortex Manipulator for reference.)

And Voila! All of space and time awaits you! Now go save the universe!
