Step 1: Rip a Pallet Stretcher

I started with a pallet stretcher that had some interesting grain / spalting in, then ripped it down the middle and chose the best side.

Step 2: Find a Contrasting Wood and Cut Out Pieces

Once i had my pieces lay out on the pallet wood i found a old drawer that was a darker wood, and used this to lay out the leg pieces.

Step 3: Pieces for the Frame

One i had cut out the pieces i had 2 leg pieces if the dark wood.

One piece of pallet wood and then a longer piece of pallet wood to be the top.

Step 4: Make Recess for the Glass & Picture

Next i marked out where the glass and then picture would fit.

I marked a few cm from the bottom and top so the glass would be held in position and cut away slowly until i had a tight friction fit.

Step 5: Through Tenon in Legs

Next i lay out the position for the piece that would basically act as a stretcher.

And again cut away slowly until i had a tight fit.

It helped to keep the glass in place while marking up so everything would end up in the right position.

Step 6: Glue Up

Next was the glue up, as it was a awkward shape to clamp i opted for super glue.

I started by glueing in the "stretcher piece"

Then added a decorative middle and a thin square on top of the legs.

Then the longer piece as the top.

Step 7: Sand & Finish

My plane left a decent finish so i started at 240 grit and ended at 500.

Then applied a clear gloss coat sanding at 500 in between coats.

Step 8: Add Picture

All that was left was to add the glass, picture and backer (all of which i used from a bought frame)

The frame is designed to hold a 4x6 photo but can be scaled to hold pretty much anything.

The overall height is around 8" and 10" length with a 3/4" width.

Although i haven't used the traditional joinery (mainly due to the size) i love how its turned out and its something ive wanted to try for ages now.
