Step 1: Supplies and Tools

Supplies

  • 4 Small twigs (with hooks on the ends)
    • Hooks = other twig shoots.
  • 1 thick branch

Tools

  • Wood saw
  • Safety gloves
  • Fine and coarse sandpaper
  • Drill
  • Drill bit (the same diameter as the small twigs)
  • Pair of pliers
  • Piece of thick wire (wire hanger or 10 gauge wire will work)
  • Wood glue
  • Varnish
  • Open Fire (used for wood burning method)

Step 2: Cut Thick Branch

Cut the thick branch to your desired length (about 6 inches). Then make the 4 twigs the same length with their hooks on one end.

Step 3: Sandpaper

Rub the branch with the coarse sandpaper and then use the fine sandpaper to make it smooth.

The rough course sandpaper is used to clean or remove the desired amount of bark from branch. The finer sandpaper is used to give a nice smooth finish.

Step 4: Carve and Whittle

Using a cutter knife or favorite whittling knife , carve a flat area which will be the front area of the key holder.

Step 5: Open Fire Wood Burning

Wearing safety gloves and using a pair of pliers, heat the thick wire over a flame until it is red hot. Once it is red hot, using the wire to burn into the wood any words that you like. I used the word “KEYS”. (It is also a good idea to write the word in pencil on the wood as a guide before you start burning)

Step 6: Drill Twig Holes

Wearing safety gloves, use the drill to drill four holes in the the thick branch. The holes must be on the underside of the word at the front of the branch. This is where the four twigs will go. You can use your hands if the wood is soft enough.

Step 7: Twig Prep

Prepare the 4 twigs so they are smooth and so they fit into the drilled hole. Whittle away bark and shape ends to size.

Step 8: Glue

After checking that all four twigs fit into the holes in the thick branch, put some wood glue in each of the holes and push the four twigs into them. (It doesn’t matter if some glue comes out of the holes when you push the twigs in because you can clean it off when it is dry.) Make sure the hooks on the twigs are facing the front of the thick branch where the word is. Next you need to set it in a position to allow it to dry for 24 hours.

Step 9: Varnish

Apply a clear varnish with a clean towel or non-lint rag to the key holder to protect the wood. Use gloves to protect your hands from the varnish. Allow it to dry for 12 hours.

Step 10: Mounting Hooks

Using small screws and wall hanging hooks screw the hooks into the back of the key holder. Be sure to place the hooks at the same height on the back of the key holder so that it hangs evenly on the wall when finished.

Step 11: Summary

I think this is cool because it is using a natural branches/twigs. Make sure that you are wearing the gloves and goggles for safety when using cutter knife and a saw. If you are a kids like me, be sure to have adult supervision when cutting and burning the wood.
