Trevor and Thaddeus Headphone Instructable

Get ready to learn how to make some of the best DIY headphones with little materials!

Step 1: Step 1: Materials

-Cup (Plastic, Foam, or Paper)

-Wire (About 8-10 feet long)

-Magnets (Any size works)

-Aux cord (To plug into your phone)

-Sandpaper (To sand the ends of the wire)

-Electrical tape (To tape down magnet and voice coil)

Step 2: Step 2: Assembly, Sanding, and Coiling

1. We need to sand both ends of the wire because, the outer layer of the wire has a thin coat of paint. The layer of paint will stop the electricity from traveling in the headphones If we sand the paint the electricity can make a full loop around the headphones.

2. Coiling the wire is necessary because, when the coiled wires have electricity flowing through them they act as an electromagnet. The electromagnet is what produces the sound. The bass comes from the repelling of the electromagnet and the inner magnet.

3. Coil about 65 coils around the magnet to amplify sound and not to overwhelm the magnet with energy.

Step 3: Step 3: Magnet Explanation

1. The reason why headphones make sound is the magnets

2. The magnets vibration and the coil around the magnets is what is going to mainly transmit the music to the headphone user

3. If you have stronger magnets, you will have a louder music experience

4. If you have a weak magnet, you will have a low sounding music experience

Step 4: Step 4: Plug and Play

1. The reason why we are going to sand the ends of the wire is to allow the sound to transmit through the wire from the aux plug. People may think that it doesn't change anything if it's sanded or not, but in fact the layer above the actual wire blocks the current completely! We wrap the wire around the terminals on the aux plug because this is what makes the headphones work. Without them being plugged into the terminals correctly, the headphones will not work.

Step 5: Step 5: Troubleshooting Headphones

Step 1

-Check the connections and make sure everything is properly connected

-Better sound happens when one of the wires that are connected with the aux is touching the metal bar

-Both wires should not be touching or be both touching the metal bars in the Aux

-Make sure the magnet has room to vibrate or just make sure the coils that are wrapped don’t touch the magnet

-By turning down the bass on your device that the headphone is plugged into

-Make sure all the parts are properly attached to the cup.

Step 2

-Changing the number of coil wraps around the magnet will make the sound better

-Changing the magnet to a stronger magnet like a neodymium magnet

-Changing the wire to a copper 28 Awg wire

-Make the cup smaller as in length Instead of putting one magnet put two magnets

Step 6: Step 6: Procedure for Building Headphones

1. Cut about 10 feet of copper wire - The longer it is, the better the sound!

2. Leave 1 foot of wire on one end - This is for the sanding portion of the wire

3. Take a big highlighter and wrap wire around it until you have the amount of wraps that you desire - It can be with any material that you can wrap the wire around

4. Sand the ends of the wire - This is for plugging the headphones into the aux cord

5. Wrap wire around magnets - This step creates an electro magnet which is what is gonna produce the sound in the headphones

6. Tape the wire and magnet down onto any type of cup - this is the end part of the headphones which directs the sound towards your ears

7. After you do that, wrap the sanded ends of the wire around the aux cord

8. Plug into your device and enjoy

Step 7: Step 7: Enjoy Your Headphones

1. After all of this tedious work that you have done leading up to this point, it is time to glam up your headphones

2. Now you can decorate and do anything you want to your headphones to make them a perfect fit for you

3. After you wrap both ends of each wire from the individual speakers, you can solder or any method you want to keep them stable together

4. After you are done decorating, plug your aux cord into you phone and enjoy
