Introduction: Trust Issue Handcuffs

This Valentine's Day knit up a set of adjustable handcuffs to tell your sweetheart, "I trust you won't steal my Xbox while I'm asleep, but I'm not 100% sure that you'll remember a safe word".

Bindy, but easily removed by the wearer, this ultra-light bondage project is quick, simple and may be a fun accompaniment to a box of chocolates...

Step 1: Materials and Tools

Materials and Tools

  • Yarn - Color A - Worsted weight (1/4 skein)

  • Yarn - Color B - Chunky weight (1/3 skein)

  • #10 needles

  • Tapestry needle

  • Scissors

The needles are the corresponding size to the worsted weight yarn, but are small for the chunky weight yarn.  The tighter knit gives the cuffs more form.

Step 2: Center Piece

The pattern beings with the middle...

Knit CenterPiece (Moss stitch)

Cast on 12 stitches

Row 1: k1 p1

Row 2: p1 k1

Repeat for 20 rows

Cast off

Sew Center Piece

  • Fold piece over lengthwise and sew around the edges using a tapestry needle

  • Thread needle through both sides and pass yarn through the loop, creating a knot

Pattern Variation: The middle section can be made longer to accommodate...whatever needs to be accommodated.

Step 3: Cuff 1

A cuff is added to each end and interlaced through a small hole, which is what make it adjustable...

Knit First Cuff (Garter Stitch)

Row 1: Color 2 - Pick up 6 stitches off end of center piece

Row 2: Increase 1 stitch at the start of the row, knit 6 stitches, increase 1 at end of the row

Row 3: Knit

Row 4: Increase 1 stitch at the start of the row, knit 8 stitches, increase 1 at end of the row

Row 5 - 18: Knit row

Row 19: knit 3 stitches, knit 2 together, knit 2 together, knit 3 stitches(This will create the hole to run the center piece through)

Row 20: knit 3 stitches, pick up 2 stitches (this closes the hole created by row 19), knit 3 stitches

Row 21: Knit row

Row 22: knit 2 together, knit 6 stitches, knit 2 together

Row 23: knit 2 together, knit 4 stitches, knit 2 together

Row 24: knit 2 together, knit 2 stitches, knit 2 together

Row 25: knit 2 together, knit 2 together

Row 26: Cast off

Run the center piece through the hole so you can begin the second cuff in the next step.

Step 4: Sides

Knit Second Cuff

  • Starting with the end of the center piece, follow directions for first cuff except that when you reach Row 19 (the set of k2tog)

  • Fold center piece over into the gap and knit row 20, this keeps the cuff in place

Step 5: Finish Cuffs

And finally, just round out the cuffs...

  • Fold the inside edges of the cuffs towards each other

  • Beginning at row 3, loosely sew together up to row 18

  • Tie off and trim excess yarn from this and previous steps

Now you can relax and not think about the story of the guy who knocked himself unconscious while his lady friend was tied up, the party scene in Crimes and Misdemeanors, or your control issues in general. Let the romance begin!
