Introduction: Turn Your Smartphone Into a 3D Hologram Projector! Does It Work?

About: Fan-powered livestream builds in auto, home, workshop, tech, science, geek and vr!

Don't throw away that stack of old CD's just yet! Those plastic cases that once housed your favorite jams from teen idols like New Kids on the Block, Spice Girls and Hanson can now be used to create awesome 3D holograms straight from the future!

This is the hologram video I used: https://youtu.be/Y60mfBvXCj8

Note about the lighter: Although I introduce a lighter as one of the optional materials you can use, I don't use it in the video. If you're having trouble making clean breaks with the CD case after scoring it with a hobby or blade knife, run the lighter over the crack line before snapping it. It will warm the plastic helping it break more cleanly along the line. But only use the lighter briefly because the plastic is porous and traps some of the black smoke from the flame so you get translucent black cloudy areas in your projector.

But, is this real? Are you really seeing a 3D hologram popping out of your phone?

Well, not exactly! It's an illusion called Pepper's Ghost which I explain at the end of the video. If you have more questions about the project or how Pepper's Ghost works, post them below!
