Introduction: Undead Apple Pie

Ingredient and Material List

Prep Time: 2 1/2 - 3 hours * Baking Temperature: 375 degrees

---Pie Crust---

Note: Requires 1 hour of refrigeration before baking

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 sticks cold unsalted butter
1/2 cup cold water
1 tsp ultra-fine sugar
1 tsp sea salt

---Pie Crust glaze---

1 small egg
2 tsp sugar

---Pie Filling----

5 large granny smith apples
1 medium lemon + zest
3/4 cup ultra-fine sugar
2 tbsp  unsalted butter
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/16 tsp ground cloves (pinch)

--Decoration--
Note: buy additional apples to leave room for error

5 mini granny smith apples
4 large apples
1 large lemon

--Materials---

large mixing bowl
medium mixing bowl
bowl
sifter
whisk
measurement utensils
pairing knife
chef knife
peeler
rolling pin
plastic wrap
tin foil
spatula (or mixer if preferred)
8 in. pie bakeware
pastry brush
spoon
zester
cutting board





Step 1: Pie Crust

1.)  sift flour, sugar and salt into a medium mixing bowl. 

2.)  whisk vigorously for about 3 minutes.

3.) cut butter into 1/4 inch squared

      cut squares into 9 quadrants creating cubes

4.) place cubes into flour mix and mix lightly

5.) fold butter into flour (use mixer or preferred mixing technique)

6.) add water in three intervals until butter spots are fully integrated

6.) press pie dough into a flat  cake about 1/2 inch deep onto plastic wrap

7.) wrap plastic wrap around flattened dough and refrigerate for 1 hour


Step 2: Decoration Part 1 (Faces)

Tip: Work one apple at a time to prevent oxidation

1.) peel and core mini granny smith apple

2.) use pairing knife to cut the flat side of apple halves to make it concave. 
      save wide slivers to create the torso

USE CAUTION

3.) carve a face onto the convex side
      run your knife CAREFULLY in a haphazard fashion to denote gashes and wounds

4.) squeeze large lemon in large bowl and place apples as you work. 
      toss with every new face to coat evenly


Step 3: Decoration Part 2 (hands)

USE !!EXTREME CAUTION!!

1.) peel and core large apple

2.) place half apple on a cutting board

Note: draw fingers to longest length to give room for sculpting

4.) start lightly drawing middle finger so that you are centered

5.) draw remaining fingers, hand and wrist

6.) cut around hand

7.) cut the wedges between fingers

8.) carefully carve out fingers
      there should be full thickness under ever finger which will allow you to curl and extend fingers at any angle

9.) even out the palm

10.) gently place in bowl with faces and spoon lemon juice over it

Step 4: Pie Filling

1.) cut apples into bite sized cubes (since apples vary in size, place in tin as you cut and fill until it is flush with top

2.) take hands out of large bowl and drain the lemon juice into a separate bowl

3.) add apple cubes to large bowl

4.) add spices, flour, sugar, lemon juice and zest

5.) mix until all apples are fully coated

Step 5: Pie Assembly Part 1

1.) cover counter in plastic wrap and dust with flour

2.) place dough on the plastic and dust before placing another piece of plastic wrap on top

3.) roll dough evenly until it is about a foot across

4.) place bakewear on top of dough and flip it

5.) press dough into pie bakewear

6.) line crust thickly or cut if desired

Step 6: Pie Assembly Part 2

1.) place cubbed apples into pie dough and flatten as much as possible

2.) dot with butter

3.) take hands and gently place in large bowl to coat with spices

4.) place faces and hands into another bowl

5.) pour remaining spices onto the apples

Step 7: Pie Assembly Part 3

1.) places faces on top of apples

2.) use the wide slivers to form torsos

3.) place hands by planting the wrist through the spaces between the faces

4.) whisk egg

5.) brush over pie crust liberally

6.) sprinkle crust with sugar

Step 8: Baking

1.) pre-heat oven to 345 degrees

2.) pl ace in upper mid rack with loose tin foil cover

3.) bake for 1 hour
