Introduction: Upcycle Salt Lamp

I bought what looks like a large salt rock at a garage sale and was given the lamp for free. I think the salt rock is supposed to be a candle holder since it is hollow. Decided to use the lamp to light it salt rock as a dim room light. This is my first instructable post and super excited to post it. Feedback is appreciated.

Step 1: Supplies and Tools

Supplies:

  • Lamp - LED light
  • Salt rock
  • Aluminum tape

Tools:

  • Soldering iron
  • Wire cutter (wire strippers)
  • Solder
  • Heat shrink tubing
  • Hot glue gun
  • Lighter
  • Screwdriver

Step 2: Disassemble

The lamp needs to be disassembled. I removed the weight in the base which required me to cut the wires connecting the power supply and the LED and the switch.. I did this to allow space to move the switch. The arm connecting the base to the lamp head is removed and the LED and the lens cover are kept. This lamp has what appears to be an aluminum cup which I believe is for heat dissipation.

Step 3: Wiring LED

Using the screwdriver, I made a hole on the side of the heat sink and put the wires through. I had to do this since the wires originally went through the bottom of the heat sink but I needed the bottom to be flat to be able to attached it to the lamp base.

Step 4: LED

I taped the LED to the lens cover so that it wouldn't fall off.

Step 5: Rewiring Switch

I reconnected the switch to the LED power supply and then to the LED, the same circuit that I had to cut. Stripped and soldered the wires. Don't forget the heat shrink tubing so nothing would short circuit since the base is metal.

Step 6: Final Details

I applied hot glue to the heat sink and attached it to the base. The switch was placed through the same hole that was used for running the power supply wires. At this point I realized I forgot to run the LED wires through the same hole before soldering, which is why you can see the LED wires running underneath the base. It is a simple fix that I'll take care of another day.

Step 7: All Done

The LED base is complete!! Place the rock salt on top of the base, connect it to electrical outlet and flip the switch.
