Useful Knots

These are a few knots that are great for outdoor use.

Supplies

Length of rope that fits your needs.

Step 1: Clove Hitch/ 2 Half Hitches

The clove hitch also known as two half hitches is a very secure constrictor knot.

1. Create a loop on what ever you want to attach to, that is a half hitch.
2. Make another loop but the opposite way.
3. Tighten it and the object will be secured.

Step 2: Timber Hitch

The timber hitch, like its name says, is made to pull wood and holds it by constriction.

1. Loop your rope around the wood then over itself
2. Twist the rope on itself
3. Tighten it

Step 3: Bowline

The bowline is a loop knot. It is often taught by the story of a rabbit that goes out of his hole around the tree and back down the hole.

1. Make a loop
2. Put the rope through the loop
3. Make it go around the main line
4. Put it through the loop again
5. Tighten

Step 4: Sheet Bend

The sheet bend is a knot made for attaching two ends of rope together. It even works with different size ropes.

1. Form a J with one end
2. Thread the other through the loop
3. Over the short end
4. Under the loop
5. Over the long end
6. Under itself
7. Tighten

Step 5: Diagonal Lashing

Diagonal lashing is made for tying to sticks or bars together at less than a 90 degree angle.

1. Tie a timber hitch at the cross of the sticks.
2. Wrap the rope vertically four times
3. Wrap the rope horizontally four times
4. Make sure the whole thing is tight
5. Tie it off with the knot you want

Step 6: Square Lashing

Square lashing is made for tying two sticks at a right angle. Sorry some of my images are blurry

1. Tie a clove hitch on one of the bottom sides
2. Going to the left or the right weave over under
3. Do four round of that
4. Wrap under the one to the right or left of the one you started on depending on what you chase at the beginning.
5. And go over under that way
6. Make sure everything is tight
7. Tie off with the knot of you choice
