Introduction: Viking Chess "Forest Vs Concrete" Remix
I made two new versions of my viking chess for a new laser I bought: the S1 from Xtool! I scaled down the first version (the pawns, the board and the storage box) I made to be able to fit on the laser bed. I also designed a new theme for the game: forest against concrete. The rule of the game are the same, but in this version, the attackers are the buildings and the defenders are the trees, the king is a sequoia!
Supplies
Machines:
- any laser that can cut through 3mm plywood (mine is a 40W)
Materials:
- 3mm plywood
- paints and brush
- white wood glue
Step 1: Context
I bought a Xtool S1 laser cutter for my project to make a mobile Game/Fab Lab in a cargo bike! I did this remix of my first version of viking chess to fit in the laser and made some modification to the storage box.
Step 2: 2D CAD With Inkscape
Pawns and board design:
I used again Inkscape, a free 2D software to make my own designs for the trees and the buildings.
Viking art for the wood layers on the side of the box:
I used the designs from Jonas Lau Markussen website, great documentation and viking art!
Inside of the box:
I used MakerCase to generate a box with dividers that I slightly modified to hold all the pawns and be able to pull off the top of the case.
Step 3: Nesting With Deepnest
I used the open source software deepnest.io to optimize the cutting and save wood!
Step 4: Laser Cutting
I used the Xtool software " Xtool Creative Space "to program the cutting on the Xtool S1. You may need to resize and reorganize the components depending on your laser size.

Step 5: Painting
I used acrylic paints to decorate the pawns and the box
Step 6: Glue Time
I used white glue for the storage board
Step 7: Playing
Rules are the same for the two versions of the games.
Happy viking chess plays!
