In this Ible, I'm going to show you how to make this fancy Bottle Opener out of different wood types.

What you'll need for this project:

Several wood species (I've used cherry, chestnut and italian walnut, mainly)
Table saw
Wood glue
Orbital sander
Oil or other finishing options
Special bottle opener (you can find here the one that I've used)
Optional: thickness planer

Step 1: Choose Your Wood

This project is very similar to a regular cutting board.

But, when choosing your wood types for this project, you don't have to worry about food contact, which is good because we can use types of wood that are often not that good for food.

One example is chestnut: it's a beautiful wood indeed, but it develops tannin marks on the surface easily, and they can change food flavours.

Here, we just have to make a pattern that satisfy us.

I had some spare hardwood chunks, and I've chosen cherry, chestnut and italian walnut for the first board.

Step 2: Cut Stripes of Woods

Start by cutting stripes of wood of the same sizes on your table saw.

As you can see by the photo, i didn't have a table saw when I shoot the video, so I've used the top part of my unusual miter saw instead and it worked out really smooth.

I suggest you to cut an odd number of stripes, so you can obtain a nice symmetrical pattern for your board.

Step 3: Time for Glue!

When you have chosen your stripes pattern and cut them to size, it's time to glue them together.

Use a good quality wood glue, but you don't need a waterproof one since this board won't be exposed to water.

Watch the video in the 1st step to see how to glue these stripes, it's really easy.

Clamp them strong for one night and let everything dry.

Step 4: Oil and Finishes

Now, it would be a good time to run this board through a thickness planer.

That would remove glue drops and makes everything perfectly flat.

Since I don't own one in my little workshop, I've planed everything with an orbital sander and some coarse sandpaper (40/50 grit), moving on up to 240/280 grit to obtain a super smooth and pleasant to touch surface.

I've then added two generous layer of tung oil and let them dry for one night each layer.

I've love how tung oil sparks up the contrast and color of the wood, leaving no film at the same time. It's my favorite kind of finish.

Step 5: Add the Bottle Opener and You Are Done!

You're are almost at it!

Take a wall bottle opener and align it to the board.

Marks the two holes on the wood with a pencil and pre-drill with a thin bit. That will greatly help you in alignment and will also prevent wood splitting.

Screw the opener in and you are done, your fancy wooden bottle opener it's ready!

You can place it on the wall by adding two picture hangers on the back, or maybe two adhesive strips.
