Introduction: Week 7: Clay 3D Printer (Clay Cup)
In this instructable, I will guide you through the process of creating a functional 3D printed clay cup using Grasshopper for GCode generation and the Potter Bot for printing. I will share the steps I took, including the Grasshopper workflow provided in class.
Supplies
- Computer with Grasshopper installed
- 3D printer (Potter Bot)
- Clay suitable for 3D printing
- Clay extruder
- Clay cutting tool
- Water for clay conditioning
Step 1: Designing the Cup in Grasshopper
- I opened Grasshopper on my computer and loaded the workflow provided in class.
- The workflow already had a cup design component, which I used to generate the cup shape.
- I adjusted the parameters, such as height and diameter, to customize the cup's size to my preference.
Step 2: Generating GCode in Grasshopper
- With the cup design component in place, I connected it to the Grasshopper component for GCode generation.
- I ensured that the printing parameters, such as layer height and print speed, were set according to the specifications of the Potter Bot and the clay being used.
- After confirming the GCode preview, I saved the generated GCode file.
Step 3: Preparing the Potter Bot
- I prepared the Potter Bot for 3D printing by cleaning and assembling the clay extruder.
- Next, I loaded the clay into the extruder, ensuring it was properly conditioned for smooth extrusion during printing.
Step 4: Printing the Cup
- I transferred the GCode file to the Potter Bot's control system.
- I initiated the printing process and closely monitored the initial layers to ensure proper adhesion and extrusion.
- Throughout the printing process, I periodically checked the extrusion to ensure its consistency, making adjustments as needed.
- During the printing process, I encountered some challenges with inconsistent extrusion, but I was able to overcome them by modifying the Grasshopper workflow.
- Once the printing was complete, I allowed the Potter Bot to finish the entire cup.
Step 5: Post-Printing Finishing
- After removing the cup from the printing bed, I inspected it for any imperfections or support remnants.
- Using a clay cutting tool, I carefully removed any unwanted parts or support structures if necessary.
- Finally, I allowed it to air dry.
